What works

The installer installs flawlessly, the game appears to run flawlessly. Was able to play through the first stage of evolution, then it crashed. Graphical glitches appear at the second stage (works only if I start from there, not continuing my first game from stage 1) No errors while changing settings whatsoever in the game

What does not

The game works with bugs and glitches, so what isn't working is the graphical rendering and something is happening when going from one stage to the next. It didn't do anything by lowering graphics or maximizing them, it still looked the same.

What was not tested

I tried stage 1 and 2, both worked okay but with issues. So I guess I haven't tried the other stages. At stage 2 it became unbearable to "watch" the game.

Additional Comments

Like I said, the game runs and installs flawlessly without a problem, I haven't done anything to manipulate Wine with anything it just started on its own with standard configuration. But the game quits between stages and it glitches, unplayable on the whole but still works. So I'm giving it a bronze reward.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO: Play Spore with minimal problems

The easiest way to play Spore without problems in Wine:

  • Make sure youre using wine version 1.1.26 or greater.
  • Start Spore using the -safe flag, e.g.

    wine Sporebin/Sporebin.exe -safe
  • If you have problems: In the Settings menu, in Graphics, set the Lighting to the lowest possible quality. This is a useful workaround for almost all in-game crashes.
  • Also: Turning off shadows allows paint mode to work properly.
  • Enjoy.

If you experience problems:

  • Make sure the current working directory you run this from is the SPORE folder, not the Sporebin folder - it'll spin forever looking for the data folder otherwise.
  • If it hangs on start-up then try to rename DMCmdPortalClient.dll(also a problem on Windows):

    mv Sporebin/DMCmdPortalClient.dll Sporebin/DMCmdPortalClient.dll.bak

  • Make sure you're passing the -safe flag.
  • If you are using PulseAudio: this is not officially supported by Wine, but some users have reported success using the ESD or OSS audio driver instead of the ALSA driver. This is configurable in winecfg. It is recommended that you do not use PulseAudio with Wine.
WARNING: Common pitfalls

If you experience graphical problems, please try to run your copy with the -safe flag, then file a bug with whether it works differently or not.

If you have problems with reaching the license server, please build from GIT or use this patch.

Experimenting with Offscreen Rendering mode (AKA: fbo vs backbuffer vs pbuffer)
If you're experiencing terrible performance, then playing with the OffscreenRendering key might be something you should try. Go to the key in the registry (use regedit) - lists the useful Wine registry keys, where they are, and how to edit them.
Works for NVIDIA
I noticed that the game works perfectly in NVIDIA video cards with closed-source driver installed. However, users using an Intel card with open-source driver may experience missing textures and more problems - not playable.

Spore won't work
by Brad on Saturday March 24th 2018, 8:10
When I run spore from the steam library I get "The program SporeApp.exe" has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". I didn't do anything to it. I just installed it today and it gives me this. Any solutions?
Stuttering sound & its fix
by Dorian Wouters on Sunday February 4th 2018, 4:04
If you experience stuttering sound (in the whole game; in my case using PulseAudio as the sound backend) in a non-clean wineprefix, use winecfg to override the `dsound` DLL to Wine **builtin**.
not found:gl 5626
by Jon Paul Sapsford on Saturday February 28th 2015, 20:38
Installed the game just fine, no issues whatsoever. When I run it (either from the menu or in terminal with the -safe flag) it sits there for like 2 minutes and then pops up a menu that says not found:gl 5626

After some googling I found that the error occurs in Windows a lot when the user's registry is borked up. Can't seem to find anything about fixing it for WINE.

I'm assuming that I need to install something via winetricks, but can't figure out exactly what and don't want to just install stuff for the heck of it.

Any tips would be awesome!
