What works

  1. Game installer works.  I ended up having to download a "crack" to prevent it from "calling home" ... the DRM on this game (SecuROM) is one of the controvercial ones where it only allows a limited number of installs and it calls home regularly.  There is a more recent patched version of the game (I did not test) which may not call home in the same way, and may not require a crack to make it work.  This is not a problem with running it under WINE, it is more an issue with the game developer.
  2. Single Player "works," but it's not precisely playable.  There are serious problems with the interface where the mouse movement is horrible and unpredictable.  After the opening cut scenes, where you first begin controlling your character (on the beach if you can get there), the game crashed for me.
  3. Cut Scenes work, and play fairly smoothly.
  4. Accessing the options menu for graphics and so forth.

What does not

  1. Widescreen.  It was not even selectable from the menu, and if you modify the .ini file to enable widescreen (and change the resolution numbers to match), the game will start in 640x480 without widescreen enabled.
  2. Playing the game was impossible for me, but this might be due to something specific about my machine.  It crashed once I was able to move my character around with a rather extensive debug report.
  3. Water effects are severely problematic, and may be associated with the overall instability of the game.  This is purely conjecture, but it is worth noting that the game does play less horribly if you turn off all water effects.

Additional Comments

I did not start with a clean install of Wine. I had already installed a number of libraries, etc, with WineTricks. For instance, I had several of the dx9___ libraries installed, etc. Some of these may actually be the source of the troubles I had. I may revisit this in the future.
