What works

Installation was smooth and uneventful.  The main program and all the bundled extras installed without a hitch.

The program runs well, despite a lot of interface lag.  I needed to tweak the MIDI settings from within the program to get playback working, but after that, it was fine.  Most of the voices played and sounded good.

Keyboard and mouse note entry worked without problems.  I don't have any MIDI instruments, though, so I couldn't test that input mode.

What does not

A few of the voices don't play, specifically the male singers.

Workarounds

What was not tested

MIDI instrument input and output and most of the voices.  There are an awful lot of instrument voices in the program, and although I'm sure some of them don't work, I'm not sure which ones beyond the male singers.

Additional Comments

Despite missing a few voices and having a laggy interface, it's definitely usable.

cannot install Garritan
by Daniel on Friday June 19th 2009, 8:23
Hi. Can someone please help me with installing this software? It lets me install Finale but it won't let me install Garritan. Also, when I open up Finale, I get an error message saying something like FinMidi isn't working and another saying something about hp.dll. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
RE: cannot install Garritan

After posting my Arch Linux results, I found the installation got screwed up when other applications were installed, giving that FINMIDI/hp.dll error. The solution was to install Finale with its own WINEPREFIX, e.g.

WINEPREFIX=~/.finale wine FinWinSetup.exe (or whatever that file is called)

Then running it with

WINEPREFIX=~/.finale wine ~/.finale/drive_c/.../finale.exe

Maybe this will also solve your Garritan problem.
Still slow on ubuntu 9.04

The recurrent problem for finale is slowness. The soft is really slow when you change tool or pass from an editing mode to a listen mode.

What did you do to get it working? I'm experiencing the same problem.

I also had problems with the instalations of Garritans Instruments. I thought there was a scratch on my DVD causing my Garritan instalation failure.

I mounted the dvd as MAC-cdrom and copied the garritaninstruments data to a folder. Then I unmounted the DVD and mounted it as windows CDROM copied the Garritan setup to the folder with mac-data. Then the installation worked fine!

I used to use timidty and soundfonts, but i dont need to anymore with the ARIA player!
