What works

Earlier attempts to run the application in a vanilla wine install failed, as the application froze during the display of the splash screen.

As a preparation, I downloaded and installed some microsoft binaries with winetricks:

sh winetricks corefonts vcrun6 directx9 vcrun2005 vcrun2005sp1

Compatibility mode was set to Windows2000 and activate OpenGL rendering as a D3D in wine using regedit.

Application loads, basic functionality seems to be there. Once loaded, it seems that the 3D viewport is not refreshed. You are able to click the icons, though. On the lower right corner there is the ? symbol. Click it. In the newly opened window scroll down and the second last symbol is the activation of the 'wireframe' mode. Click it and the 3D viewport should refresh. You can draw and geometry and render your viewport.

What does not

Direct3D rendering mode. Debug messages from Wine say:

fixme:d3d7:IDirect3DDeviceImpl_7_SetClipStatus (0x13be9f90)->(0x32dcbc): Stub!
fixme:d3d:state_subpixel Render state WINED3DRS_SUBPIXEL not implemented yet
fixme:d3d7:IDirect3DDeviceImpl_7_SetClipStatus (0x13be9f90)->(0x32f06c): Stub!

I am unable to close the application using the window close symbol.  That is maybe related to a runtime error that I receive during load-up of the application from Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library:

Runtime Error! R6034 An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. Please contact the applications support team for more information.

Additional Comments

TrueSpace has gained significance for 3D content creation after it has become freely available on Window desktop computers. Having said that, I would assume that Blender is already outperforming TrueSpace in some areas. Blender undergoes constant rapid development and is freely available under the GPL.
