Kohan II: Kings of War is the second standalone installation in the Kohan series, following the original Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns and its expansion, Kohan: Ahriman's Gift. The Kohan demo includes the tutorial and a single mission from the complete game, which are sufficient for testing most general features of the game engine.

Selected Test Results

What works

  • Rendering of menus and the introduction.
  • Audio, comprising voice acing, sound effects and music. The audio performance was flawless, even when rendering seemed to lag badly.
  • Rendering the game from a single perspective with no companies selected. No lag was evident until the viewport was moved, with scrolling seeming to cause a significant drop in frame rates.

What does not

  • Rendering the cutscenes, as these are in AVI format.
  • The tutorial could not be finished, as there was significant rendering and interaction lag when moving the viewport across the scene.
  • There was noticeable low-frequency flickering of the fog of war after a company had been selected, which resulted in lag was in excess of that experienced when panning the screen. The FOW also did not appear until a company was selected.
  • When the two black boxes were drawn across the top and bottom of the screen to create the "widescreen" effect as the tutorial began, there remained a one-pixel-wide strip of terrain rendered down the left-hand side of the screen.

Workarounds

What was not tested

  • Any further gameplay beyond the first moments of the tutorial, as rendering and action slowed too far to be playable.
  • Whether the game performed normally on graphics cards of a higher specification (though it would surprise me, due to the fact that entire scenes could be animated and rendered normally until scrolling began.)

Additional Comments

Additional Comments The game seems to constantly repeat debug information about NVIDIA shaders and invalid masks during the following in the stage I assume to be game play.
