Maintainers: About Maintainership
What works
Everything (once I figured out the configurations and launches)
I suspect quicktime is used for the animations, so you have to get that working first.
I had to get the correct drivers for nVidia (from livna) before I had a chance. glxgears is a good way to check openGL.
ALSA works better than OSS (fedora core 6) , audio hw acceleration set to standard.
Strongly recommend using virtual desktop (wineconfig -- graphics).
Suggest running both $ winecfg and $wine Myst.exe from bash.
What does not
OSS fails to provide sound for animations.
ALSA tends to have a problem if audio hardware acceleration is set to full.
Many problems possible without virtual desktop. Sometimes it's OK, but in those cases the system is hijacked by the app. Sometimes I get an error essage about not being able to change the screen resolution, but I have reason to believe that problem is outside of wine.
I have failures when launching from the wine menu. The menu command sees to include an environmental variable that screws things up.
Sudden mouse moves from inside to outside the app window/area during animations risks a crash (especially INT 21h with bad parameters crashes a handler). This is especially so during the start-up, but can be avoided if you just don't do that mouse move. OK to click as an escape from intro animation sequence.
Workarounds
What was not tested
I used win98 emulation instead of win95 in all but the earliest efforts.

The installer should run as advertised with no additional tweaks to wine needed.
You will need to change a few config options in wine to get Myst:ME working properly.
Although the game works in a real WindowsXP environment, you must set wine to make it work in Windows 95 or 98 mode.
To run Myst:ME, I suggest using the commandline:
nice -n 19 wine Myst.exe && xrandr -s 0
This seems to fix issues with sound, as well as returning you to your original resolution when Myst.exe exits
When you try to save a game for the first time, or load a saved game, a file-save or file-load dialog window will pop up, taking the game out of 640x480 mode (at least on my machine). This can cause instability and will also not let you get back into fullscreen. there are a few options to work around this:
wine Myst.exe MYST.MYS
Not only will this load your saved game when myst starts, but now, while you are playing and you save the game, it will save to MYST.MYS, rather than popping up a file-save dialog.
There aren't necessary, but they may be helpful if you run into problems or glitches
After QuickTime installs itself via the Myst installer, update to the latest quicktime via the tray icon.
Right click on the tray icon and select "Check for QuickTime Updates"
ALSA might cause problems sometimes, although sometimes it works better than OSS. To change from ALSA to OSS (or vice versa) do the following:
