What works

I based my installation of NWC on the instructions provided by Connor using Linpus Linux Lite, March 30 2009.  Some simplification of the instructions.  Here's what I did:

  • Install NWC with Wine.
  • Try running NWC.  No sound.
  • In NWC, change the MIDI options (Tools > Options > MIDI), selecting playback devices "Wine midi mapper" and "Midi through".  Still no sound.
  • Use Synaptic to install the OSS wrapper for ALSA, package "alsa-oss".
  • Do the same to install Timidity.
  • Close Synaptic and open a Terminal.
  • Type "timidity -iA -Os".  This will open some ports.  Leave this running.
  • Start NWC and load a Sample.  Now we have sound!

This is where I deviate from Connor's instructions...

  • In the active Terminal, CTRL-C to get back to the command prompt.  Try NWC and it still has sound.
  • Close and re-open NWC.  We still have sound.
  • Close Terminal session window.  We still have sound in NWC.
  • Reboot Ubuntu and try NWC again.  We have sound.

So, in my installation at least, NWC midi sound is working natively in Ubuntu without any extra processes after the initial set up noted above.

I have created new NWC music files and exported these as MIDI.

In my testing so far, there are no problems with NWC functionality.

What does not

There is the double tabbing bug, 11056.  Workaround by positioning cursor using mouse.

Otherwise no other problems.

Additional Comments

I am running this in Ubuntu 9.04 on a Dell Inspiron 6400, BIOS A16, 2GB RAM. Some initial setup (see above), but very easy. My Ubuntu 9.04 jaunty install already had ALSA. I just added the "alsa-oss" (version 1.0.17-1) and "timidity" (2.13.2-20ubuntu3) packages. See above for step-by-step.
