What works

The game runs pretty well, and surprisingly even smoother than on Windows. However, it may refuse to open after the installation and you'll experience freezing at first wich will force you to End Session to close the game. You might experience a lot of crashing, but there's a workaround for that.

Although it's a 32-Bit game, it'll not run in a 32-Bit Wine prefix, you must run it under a 64-Bit Wine prefix.
Set Windows version as Windows XP

What does not

Game refuses to open after installing DirectX 9 with the following message:

------- sound system initialization -------
Error during initialization:
Unhandled exception caught

Constant crashes during the gameplay, some maps, like Zombie Verrckt, and mods will refuse to load

Workarounds

This game requires DirectX 9 even if you have a up-to-dated version. This is also required on Windows.

Write in the terminal:

winetricks dxd9_37

If the games refuses to open and (maybe) shows the following error:

------- sound system initialization -------
Error during initialization:
Unhandled exception caught

Install xact by writting in the terminal:

winetricks xact

And the game will open, yay!

However, you might experience a lot of crashing. The game will simply close without any error popup, but you'll see something like this into the "cod5sp_d3d9.log" file:

CoD WaW err: DxvkMemoryAllocator: Mapping memory failed with VK_ERROR_MEMORY_MAP_FAILED

To fix that, you must turn on Wine performance mode by disabling paranoid streaming mode in your video driver. Write in the terminal:

sudo sysctl dev.i915.perf_stream_paranoid=0

If the game still crashes, write in the console:

winetricks videomemorysize=2048

? Now, you're ready, have fun!

Please note some mods, like Abandoned School, will still refuse to open. But you'll be able to play most of the mods and you'll experience almost no crashing anymore.
