What works

Installation, starting the game, music, help, about screen

What does not

First of all, the installer must be run in Windows 95/98/ME mode to work properly, and the game must be started at 8-bit color depth (256 colors)...

After that, the game can be started, but the image is completely black. Music can be heard briefly, then the game hangs, possibly while trying to display the opening video.

Mashing spacebar before the hang apparently allows the gameplay to start, as the music for Palmtree Panic can be heard and some gameplay options become available in the menus, though not full screen mode. Something seems to be wrong here, as the music repeatedly restarts and the game eventually returns to the title screen - not what I'd expect from standing at the beginning of Palmtree Panic for several seconds.

That leaves us with the items in the help menu, which basically work, but have graphical bugs. The sprites on the about screen have a solid black background that doesn't belong. Images in the help files are displayed in 1-bit black and white. The interface is also dithered throughout the program.

Additional Comments

I tried running the game with Wine set to various Windows versions, the XP patch for this game, and native Direct X from winetricks, but none of these solved the blank screen problem. I have unimpressive video hardware and drivers (integrated Intel chipset) so maybe the image would work with better hardware. No guarantees though.
