What works

Installs, even though it claims to fail at the end. It includes wmvcore.dll, which is the Windows Media API needed by many programs, and that seems to work reasonably well. Programs can play and create Windows Media files, although output audio seems to have problems.

What does not

The player app freaks out when launched, making it unusable unless you have other software that uses the Windows Media API. The installer reported an error at the end of installation, but completed anyway. There is no uninstaller option.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Couldn't test the player app, because the window freaks out immediately upon opening.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

(Updated 2015-04-18)

The easiest way to install WMP9 is with winetricks.  http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks

For mp3 playback to work, you must have 32 bit libmpg123 installed on your system and Wine must have been compiled with mp3 support. Not all distro packages have this. The workaround for lack of mp3 support in a distro package is to use the codec installed by WMP9 itself,  l3codeca.acm. To do this, after installing WMP9 with winetricks, create a symlink named winemp3.acm in the wineprefix's /windows/system32 directory, with l3codeca.acm as the target.

Video playback does not work.
