Installing with winetricks (glitchy, but succeeds).
Playing wma, wav, mp3 files.
Playing wmv files.
Playing xvid avi and mkv files (need to install xvid separately).
Apps that depend on the WMP9 engine/codecs to play audio files (tested with Powerpoint 2007 and Overdrive Media Console). Â
What does not
When "Battery" visualization is selected (the default), the window is not refreshed after selecting menu items, so the menu remains visible. (bug 10202).
WMP security update.
Playing DRM-protected files.
What was not tested
Anything not mentioned.
This test is based on Wine 1.1.39 built from git, not the openSUSE packages. openSUSE intentionally cripples its Wine packages to disable mp3 support; this affects WMP and any app that relies on it for mp3 playback (including Powerpoint). A workaround for openSUSE users who do not know how or want to build Wine themselves is to create in the wineprefix's /windows/system32 directory a symlink named winemp3.acm pointing to l3codeca.acm (installed by WMP9).

The easiest way to install WMP9 is with winetricks. http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks
For mp3 playback to work, you must have 32 bit libmpg123 installed on your system and Wine must have been compiled with mp3 support. Not all distro packages have this. The workaround for lack of mp3 support in a distro package is to use the codec installed by WMP9 itself, l3codeca.acm. To do this, after installing WMP9 with winetricks, create a symlink named winemp3.acm in the wineprefix's /windows/system32 directory, with l3codeca.acm as the target.
Video playback does not work.
