HowTo / Notes

HOWTO successfully install cs4

CS4 can be installed with wine but it requires a few tricks.

You will need either a wine from 1.1.17 or before, or a wine from git with b8965ee7c90a687af4c84ad0ede73b1df901e16c reverted and this patch applied.

Run the commands below in order:

wget http://winezeug.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/winetricks chmod +x winetricks sh winetricks msxml6 gdiplus gecko vcrun2005sp1 ie6 mdac28 jet40 winxp wine setup.exe

Acrobat 9 needs to be selected not to install for the installation to work correctly. If anything goes wrong, the installation files will usually reside in Program Files/Common Files/Adobe, along with a setup log that is usually useless.

Photoshop works
by Damien Mahoney on Thursday December 3rd 2009, 8:46
Congratulations to everyone involved in making this work. At least for Photoshop CS4 anyway. Bridge and Flash don't work for me.

I'm running OpenSuse 11.1 on a 32bit install with git and wine 1.1.16-1.1 compiled from source.

when installing the git patch I got hunk #2 and #3 failed but it doesn't seem to affect the running of photoshop

also I got a reem of "fixme"s when installing winetricks. That doesn't seem to matter either.

Now I'll have to get it working on a 64bit install.

I guess the next step for this project would be to get windows SP3 installable by wine.

Working on 64bit OpenSuse 11.2 with wine 1.1.34-1.1

These instructions are for openSuse 11.2. They could be loosely followed for another distro.

First off I found I couldn't get Photoshop CS4 to run through wine from a winXP 32bit install (also the case for XP64bit and win7) which is read/writable from suse. Next I tried coping the complete windows install to my /home/user/.wine. Also I could not install CS4 through wine with git patch and winetricks installed.
Explained here and with more detail at:

I found compiling wine 1.1.16 on a 64bit OS install was going to be a real pain. So I installed OpenSuse 11.2 32bit and proceeded through these instructions.

Install git through the yast2 Package Manager the above mentioned link for patching.

Download wine 1.1.16 source form here (wine HQ) and expand it.

On first running of ./configure --enable-maintainer-mode
from my wine source directory. From a fairly default OS package install with gcc and main development files. I received these errors.

configure: libcapi20 development files not found, ISDN won't be supported.
configure: libgsm development files not found, gsm 06.10 codec won't be
configure: libmpg123 development files not found (or too old), mp3 codec won't
be supported.
configure: libopenal development files not found (or too old), OpenAL won't be

configure: WARNING: fontforge is missing, fonts can't be rebuilt.

configure: WARNING: rsvg is missing, icons can't be rebuilt.

configure: WARNING: icotool is missing, icons can't be rebuilt.

You can install these with yast2 software management just search for the following and install the devel packages.

rsvg -enable all pakages

If you add to your software repositories you will also find "mpg123"

"icotool" is part of "icoutils" which you will be able to find through yast2 Package Search (webpin) this will add
to your repositories. Source for this, which you shouldn't need is at

run ./configure --enable-maintainer-mode from your wine source directory to make sure there are now no errors then compile (read the read me in the source root)

after wine compiled and installed I followed the instructions on this page to install winetricks.

I then ran
wine iexplore
from a shell as other did here. Then close it. This seems to set up local pref files needed by internet explorer 6 which can halt the install of CS4. Also, more over I think this is one reason if not the only reason CS4 will fail to install on wine 1.1.34. It seems in this version that iexplore cannot be called from a shell and work properly.

now install cs4 with wine

then copy /home/user/.wine to the same place in your 64bit OpenSuse 11.2 with 64bit wine 1.1.34-1.1 installed through yast2 Package Manager and run
user@compName:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS4> wine Photoshop

Seems to work good for me so far, though selecting the text tool does crash it with no readout in the shell. Bridge works also. I'll have to check the other apps. I'll also report back on durability of photoshop as I check it out more thoroughly.

As mentioned at
the text bug can be fixed by copying atmlib.dll to /home/user/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/
I found it here

I voted, but we won't get anywhere with a simple poll. It would require significant effort on the parts of Adobe. They know of Linux, they use it in their workplace, they have Flash for it. They all want it, it's just that 35 votes in a poll doesn't support the millions of Creative Suite licensees.

First, Linux is a free community-supported OS. Which means that most people who use Creative Suite Linux are looking for a free edition, or to pirate it. I wouldn't certainly pay for Adobe's apps even if they have Linux editions, their prices are extremely expensive. Adobe has stated in several places that they have separate codebases and development teams for Windows and Mac on most of their old apps like Illustrator and Photoshop. The added development effort would be huge and not worth the payoff in terms of Adobe.

I think it would be excellent for Adobe to open-source the Flash Player as a first step. I've contributed to the Tamarin VM. The documentation on AVM2 is terrible, but having the option to have the full rendering engine and architecture would be awesome. There's nothing to lose for Adobe, if they believe Flash is the future, as it's certainly losing steam with HTML5 and AJAX and V8 and SquirrelFish Extreme and TraceMonkey.

The best short-term option for Adobe would be to contribute to Wine and make sure CS5 works for Wine, so they can target Linux and Windows with one codebase.

oops, sorry, I meant to reply to Paul dH. Sorry about the derailed commenting.
by quim kaos on Saturday November 7th 2009, 4:20
no problem about the derailed comment tho this not probably the place to have this discussion... we should be doing this on the forum...

Yes i agree with you in most of your points. it's not 35 votes (or more in other polls I've seen) that's going to make Adobe create aplications available for Linux, tho, unlike you i would pay for a Linux edition (i already have one for Windows), and i know a few enterprises that would buy it, like they have done for windows. That's not the same case for the ones already using mac. Also, those that would pirate it, already do it in windows or mac. Really, that's not a reason. If any software house thought first they would be pirated, they simply would not release anything. For the angle of piracy, it's the same having a native application or one running under wine.

Then what i really would love to see was a open-source project suite steeping up for Adobe like Open Office is steeping up for MS Office.

CS5 for Linux??

Give a comment and your vote.

Don't forget to spread the link to other places, so we will get more votes.

You need 1.1.16 or latest git with a recent patch applied (I'll get to updating the tutorial soon, I understand the MSI patch is out of date).

Wine 1.1.28 with commit b8965ee7c90a687af4c84ad0ede73b1df901e16c reverted and the other patch applied and all the winetricks done. I'm receiving the "Setup has encountered an error" message.

CS4 photoshop runs fine on wine 1.1.19
by Gip on Thursday July 9th 2009, 1:50
I followed the setup steps in wine 1.1.16 and then updated wine to 1.1.19. CS4 Photoshop work good, can handle my raw files well and accepts plugins to. I'm waiting for reports that 1.1.25 will leave me with cs4 running fine as i don't want to upgrade blind here.

Bridge runs but screen refreshes are not good until you hover your mouse over the black part of the screen.

Opening Camera raw works fine with all options.

Device central opens up fine but does not accept quit and you end up with a window not being updated.

Opening photoshop from bridge did not work well as it would not start

Open photoshop and then go to bridge works ok.
