Everything worked for me, I could install the game, I could play the game even multiplayer. But it was really slow on my machine (AMD Athlon 1700+, 512MB RAM, GeForce 4), especially the multiplayer. It was ok from the begining, but as I had more and more villagers, the performance was more and more slower. After 5-10 minutes, the game was unplayable at all.
What does not
I have to run the game from CD (I run setup from cd and then I hit Play) otherwise it doesn't run even with the crack.
The font was all black in menu.
What was not tested
For the multiplayer, I had to overwrite /etc/hosts file, because the game was showing my IP as 127.0.0.1, I've changed the IP to my Hamachi's IP and it worked great, I played with my friend and he has winbox and we played over hamachi. But it's tooooo slow......

To get multiplayer working you have to use by now the directplay libraries from microsoft, still (since 2006) no open source libraries for direct play that include libraries to open sockets and close to play games, so install winetricks:
(in ubuntu/debian) sudo apt-get install winetricks
and then exec:
It will download the directplay libraries from microsoft and install them, that's all, tcp/ip will work with direct connect.
