Comments at the bottom are a must, but, after some tweaking this game installs and plays perfectly. I have played for hours and developed every single bit of tech i can, I have tested producing every type of unit. This was all on random maps single player. Saving and reloading the game also work. As a final bonus, my irc client (kvirc) likes to pop a window over another app if someone talks to me, even this worked without crashing the game.
What does not
The only issue is the first menu after the game has loaded, the text on the buttons appears in black and can be hard to read, however, if you hover your mouse over the button the tooltip in the bottom right hand corner displays more info and this is in white (which is correct) and perfectly legible. Inside the game all fonts and colours are correct and clearly legible.
What was not tested
This game only requires an old DirectX, however, I could not get it to load using it. Before installing, follow the guide at http://wine-review.blogspot.com/2007/11/directx-90c-on-linux-with-wine.html After installing DirectX9 install AOE2, I found it worked fine with the original CD in the drive and does not require a crack, however, downloading a nocd patch does make playing more convenient. I specifically choose the full install. No further mods have been necessary.

To get multiplayer working you have to use by now the directplay libraries from microsoft, still (since 2006) no open source libraries for direct play that include libraries to open sockets and close to play games, so install winetricks:
(in ubuntu/debian) sudo apt-get install winetricks
and then exec:
It will download the directplay libraries from microsoft and install them, that's all, tcp/ip will work with direct connect.
