The Game! ...well single player. The game runs a little slower than it would on windows. With a faaast computer the game would appear normal. I ran it in a wine desktop window of 800x600 pixels to avoid fullscreen issues. Works nicely this way.
What does not
Sound lags a bit, and comes out as just static unless you set wine to use alsa, then it works fine, just a bit delayed.
What was not tested
Install game via terminal and cd to the directories before running executable(s). Once done installing, use a no-cd crack, or fixed executable to replace the origional, "empires2.exe". Next creat a shell script as follows:

To get multiplayer working you have to use by now the directplay libraries from microsoft, still (since 2006) no open source libraries for direct play that include libraries to open sockets and close to play games, so install winetricks:
(in ubuntu/debian) sudo apt-get install winetricks
and then exec:
It will download the directplay libraries from microsoft and install them, that's all, tcp/ip will work with direct connect.
