What works

Running the installer executable. Starting the program after install. Opening and editing a complex 4-layer with double sided silkscreen *.123 file, which was created in Windows by the same version v2.1.0.7 or earlier (it is not forward compatible with files from newer versions). Placing a component on a new and empty PCB multiple times. Rotating the PCB 3D preview. Zooming and panning. Toggling various visibility and selection masks. Pretty much everything that we tried.

What does not

Using the non-standard vertical scroll bar of the "Edit Panel" (check View->Toolbars->Edit panel). Using that scroll bar leads to display corruption in the edit panel area. However, this display corruption is resolved by minimizing and restoring the program window. I'll try to attach a screenshot of the issue. However, I consider this a minor issue, since on any regular sized (large enough, not laptop) screen I wouldn't need to touch this scroll bar at all.

Also, the board upload to the server and online splash screens don't work, because Sunstone no longer has the server backend running for v2. However, I simply compose my PCBs in v2, and then after all is said and done, I open them in PCB123 v4 to submit them to Sunstone for manufacturing or Gerber conversion.

Additional Comments

Wow! Wine renders the PCB working area about 3x - 5x faster than Windows XP on the same exact hardware (Thinkpad X61s). This is a huge benefit, because the screen update delay is a very important usability factor. It is so important, in fact, that I've kept using PCB123 v2.1.0.7000 on Windows XP for years, even though PCB123 v3 and v4 came out. Both v3 and v4 run a LOT slower in terms of screen redraws (after zooming, panning, and toggling of layers) than v2. And switching from XP to Win7 also slows this down further, rather than speeding it up. I suspect this is because PCB123 relies heavily on GDI, which is deprecated (no longer HW accelerated) in Win7. So just for kicks, we installed PCB123 v2 on Wine, and I was amazed how fast it rendered the work area. This is a huge usability improvement for an important and very useful free productivity app, for PCB123 alone I will probably install Wine. Great job!!! Come to think of it, maybe Wine can also improve the dreadfully slow work area rendering of PCB123 v4? I need to try that sometimes. Clearly, Wine is starting to exceed native Windows performance in certain cases.
