TaxACT prepares, prints, and e-files US
federal and state income taxes. Includes tax planning. TaxACT
provides a free (as in beer) standard (crippled) version which can be
upgraded to the deluxe version (uncrippled) for $20 with state or $14
without. Federal e-file is included with the deluxe version. The most
annoying feature missing from the standard version is the ability to
import last years data. If anything will get you to plunk down the $20,
that will. Other than that, everything is pretty much as advertised.

What works
I successfully prepared and E-filed 2007 federal and state (Virginia)
taxes with TaxACT 2007 in wine. The 2008 version is not so promising so far. It installed, applied updates from the
vendor, applied the deluxe version activation code. Printouts are still beautiful. The font sizing issues from last year seem to be fixed. See below for problems.
Printing directly to the printer from Wine now works. The deluxe program also conveniently prints to PDF, and
the PDF files contain the proper fonts all encapsulated. You may then
print the PDF from a linux program, like Adobe Acrobat or Gnome
Document Viewer. The print to PDF feature is disabled for the standard
(crippled) version.
What does not
An error dialog with no visible text keeps popping up. After dismissing it, things seem to keep working, but help does not work. The program goes into a loop - but the window is still responsive and can be closed. The custom checkboxes still don't work. I have reopened the bug. E-filing does not work.

Some people have reported getting e-file to work with wine-tricks. I followed the instructions, but no joy. Wine-tricks did let the help mostly work for me, however. The textless dialogs keep popping up, however.
