TaxACT prepares, prints, and e-files US
federal and state income taxes. Includes tax planning. TaxACT
provides a free (as in beer) standard (crippled) version which can be
upgraded to the deluxe version (uncrippled) for $20 with state or $14
without. Federal e-file is included with the deluxe version. The most
annoying feature missing from the standard version is the ability to
import last years data. If anything will get you to plunk down the $20,
that will. Other than that, everything is pretty much as advertised.
Everything works during data gathering and calculation. Printed both federal and state returns without error using HP Deskjet D2430
What does not
E-filing does not work. Stalls at "Opening a secure connection" info box. Becomes unresponsive.
What was not tested
Tax review flash movies.
Application works perfectly until you actually try to connect to e-file. After all isn't this the point of Tax software. Printed return worked flawlessly so if you file via mail then then program is perfect. Ed Note - efile requires outgoing ftp. Make sure that is enabled in your firewall. This requires loading the iptables_conntrack_ftp kernel module. I'm not sure where the GUI config for this is, but on EL5 you can edit /etc/sysconfig/iptables-config for boot time. To load until the next boot, "modprobe iptables_conntrack_ftp"
