What works
The game itself including new quests is working after the hassle of installing by referring to this guide:

I didn't even try to run the real installer from the cd after having trouble in Win7 64bit but from what I've read since then, it may have been possible in wine 64bit after all.
D3d9 is needed to run smoothly.I am using the linux video driver for my Ati video card.
What does not
The movies don't work ingame.
The quest editor doesn't work properly.
The sound wasn't working and wine was complaining about missing shared libraries but this fixed it:
sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins:i386
