HOWTO Get Knytt Stories working

After extracting the .zip somewhere, all you have to do in order to run the game is the following:

  • Grab the MSVCP60.DLL file from here:
  • Extract the included MSVCP60.DLL file to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/msvcp60.dll (pay attention to lower- vs uppercase, it needs to be lowercase).
  • Run winecfg, go to the Libraries tab, type in msvcp60.dll and press Add.
  • winetricks vcrun6
  • You can now run Knytt Stories, have fun!

It crashes while trying to import a new level.

I found this script on the forums.

This python script can extract the custom level bin into a folder. You can then just move that extracted folder into the Knytt Stories/Worlds folder.

the command is:
python theCustomLevelFileName.knytt.bin

I installed the msvcp60 library, but the game crashed each time I attempted to launch a world. After searching on the net the error I got in the console, I found that I needed the vcrun6 library.
I assume most of you already have it, but, anyway, you need it to play.
To install it, just type in a terminal : sh winetricks vcrun6

Can't Get This to Work...
by tadadata on Saturday March 19th 2011, 10:21
I've placed the lowercased msvcp60.dll file in the system32. I also have it selected in the Libraries tab in the winecfg.exe. Still no luck. Why can't I run this program?! D:

Placing msvcp60.dll in system32 is the easiest solution to get the game to work. If you want to place the file in the game's directory to avoid affecting applications that don't require the native dll then you can do so with the following launch command:
env WINEPATH="C:\\Program Files\\Knytt Stories" wine "Knytt Stories.exe"

For all you Arch Linux folks, I've created a package for you and put it into AUR:

It won't work until you add msvcp60.dll to WINE. Download it from and put it in your system32 directory (most likely ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32) then rune winecfg and, under Libraries, type msvcp60 and click Add. Done!

You may want to convert the filename to lower-case.

Otherwise, just install it and run it the normal way.

Do you know maybe how to get sound working too?
RE: How To Install
by Alexander Waldmann on Friday April 25th 2008, 7:26
I haven't got Linux installed at the moment, but if I remember, I was using ALSA for sound. It didn't need any funny tweaks.

Strange. I'm using the WINE config gui since they got rid of the config file itself, and I have all of the audio support checked off but it doesn't work. I even installed a bunch of ALSA packages independently in YUM (using Fedora 8). Thanks anyway though. Your DLL hint worked to at least get the game running.

The sound sometimes goes and sometimes doesn't.
