What works

  • Launching games through Roblox's website
  • Being able to play games for a few seconds
  • Interacting with UI in games.

What does not

  • The UI and the skybox renders, but everything else that's 3D glitches out.
    • When launching games, you get a warning that says "Please note that for security reasons, in the near future Roblox will no longer support DirectX 9. To keep playing Roblox, please upgrade to DirectX 10 or above." that might or might not be related to this issue.
    • At the time of writing this, the bug appears in Wine 6.1 and above.
  • A few seconds after playing a game, you get kicked and greeted with a message "You have been kicked due to unexpected client behavior. (Error Code: 268)"
    • This happens because of Roblox's proprietary anti cheat that's designed to work with VMProtect.
    • Right now there are no workarounds for this issue.

Workarounds

  • Used the Grapejuice wrapper in order to get Roblox games to launch when clicking play in the browser.

What was not tested

  • Gamepad support
  • Touchscreen support
  • VR support

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: AMD
  • Driver: open source

HowTo / Notes

Information regarding OpenGL vs DirectX mode

In older versions of Wine, Roblox Player & Studio work far better with OpenGL graphics enabled.

To enable OpenGL mode, open the Roblox Studio, click "File", then "Settings", followed by "Rendering". A prompt will come up saying "Changing settings may make ROBLOX unstable". Click OK. Under the Rendering submenu, change the option "graphicsMode" from "Direct3D" to "OpenGL". Restart Roblox Studio.

The game should now perform much better.

We recommend using Wine 5.0 or higher.

Note about installing Roblox on Linux easily

Running Roblox on Linux is easiest when using a helper script, such as Grapejuice or Roblox Linux Wrapper. You can obtain Grapejuice by clicking this link and Roblox Linux Wrapper by clicking this link. Each project has instructions to follow on how to install Roblox on Linux.

Warning

The Roblox game client is using anti-cheat and security features (VMProtect) that prevent Wine (and other emulators) from connecting to servers.

The client will load up just fine and you will be connected for a brief second but will be forced into a disconnect within 10 seconds.
