Easily installing and running Roblox with a wrapper

It is definitely possible to go through all of the steps of installing Roblox through it's installer, as well as everything that is needed for Roblox to run and configuring it's settings.

However, as this process is tedious, especially for someone who just wants to get Roblox up and running, there are a few wrappers to make this process easier:

  • Vinegar [Recommended] - Actively maintained fast and minimal wrapper created as an alternative to Grapejuice for more advanced Linux users.
    • Prebuilt packages for most major Linux distributions, as well as Flatpaks hosted on Flathub.
    • Does not have a GUI for configuration (yet), so all the configuring is done by editing a text file.
    • Recommended due to it's ease of install and active maintaining.
  • Grapejuice [NOT RECOMMENDED] - Another Roblox Linux wrapper focused on ease of install and use.
    • As of July 8th, 2024, Grapejuice has been marked as abandoned by it's head maintainer.
    • Please do not use Grapejuice anymore. The only reason why it was included in this list is to guide any newcomers away from it, since it was widely recommended in older tutorials. Use Vinegar instead.
    • Prebuilt packages for most major Linux distributions, however the Flatpak listed on the site does not exist anymore because the wrapper hasn't received updates in a long time.
    • Much less actively maintained than Vinegar since Roblox Player has stopped working with Wine.
    • Has a GUI for configuration.
  • Roblox Linux Wrapper [NOT RECOMMENDED] - Possibly the first Roblox Linux wrapper to be made.
    • The project repository has been archived since April 1st, 2024.
    • Please do not use this. The only reason why it was included in this list is to guide any newcomers away from it, since it was widely recommended in older tutorials.

Roblox Player doesn't work

As of the time of writing this, Roblox Player doesn't work when ran with Wine.

The reason being is that Roblox's new anti-cheat is uncompatible with Wine's current function implementations.

To avoid any confusion caused by sensationalist Linux news sources - no, Roblox did not intentionally ban Wine, nor is the company against Wine. As a matter of fact, when they were starting to introduce their new anti cheat, they have toned it down for Wine players exclusively so that they can keep on playing. Knowing this vulnerability, however, a considerable amount of cheaters have moved to Linux and have started developing cheats for Roblox on Wine. To prevent this, Roblox has introduced the same anti cheat capabilities for Wine players as it has for Windows players, effectively killing not only the possibility of Roblox on Wine cheats being developed, but also the possibility to run Roblox Player with Wine.

Even when using Grapejuice, the application simply crashes with "unrecoverable error" warning.

RE: Trying to play roblox pc But....
by gavin on Sunday August 27th 2023, 1:02
Its been pushed to the live channel, you should be able to play without issue now. Make sure you're using a wrapper like grapejuice.

Use grapejuice, if that doesnt work try their trouble shooting page. If that doesnt work your hardware is incompatible.

Roblox Wine block
by Josesk Volpe on Thursday May 4th 2023, 11:43
Don't panic! 64-Bits client is experimental, and they're collecting data to fix issues before the next release. Looks like the block is temporary. For now, use 32-Bits client.

Mouse not locking issue
by Josesk Volpe on Thursday February 23rd 2023, 21:50
This issue appears on Wayland, mouse locks normally when using X11.
However, the games are still very playable and it's still possible to play games that depends on it if you ignore the pointer. When the cursor reaches the corner, it doesn't get out of it and won't prevent you from doing multiple 360. I didn't tested it with legacy games wich depends on mouse raycasting while it's in the center though.
RE: Mouse not locking issue
by Josesk Volpe on Friday February 24th 2023, 6:48
It works fine on legacy games too, the mouse moves but the game detects as it were in the center. It's harder to aim without the pointer in the center tho as thes games uses the mouse as the pointer,
I think it does not run well because of ram usage
by isaac ortiz on Monday September 5th 2022, 20:06
After a lot of testing, i have conclueded that something unknown just dies when you hit 900MB+ of ram in roblox games, games that are older and dont use as much ram run almost flawlessly, but with newer games that use 900mb or more of ram run at 15-20 fps max. If a wine dev sees this, please fix it and thank you ;)

Can you give me an example of a Roblox game I can play that would probably use up 900mb or more ram?

Jean-Marc Spaggiari please, divide details in What works and What does not works next time
For example, for the mouse and lag issue, you could detail about that on What does not works instead of describing it on What works
OpenGL vs Vulkan vs DXVK
by Josesk Volpe on Wednesday November 3rd 2021, 16:21
I hugely recommend DXVK to run Roblox Player
According to the other reports, wined3d crashes with heavier games, so we have in mind that we can use alternatives to that
Nobody has tested vkd3d yet

Roblox has also their own OpenGL and Vulkan implementation, but:
*OpenGL is incomplete, graphics effects looks uglier and has much fewer effects than Vulkan, DirectX and Metal (MacOS). Performance is also not better than on DXVK and wined3d on lower graphics (wich looks the same in quality)
*Vulkan Roblox implementation is bad. It's way slow and even worst on integrated graphics. Although you don't seem to have much issue with input lag, the framerates are very bad. It's not the best alternative even for dedicated graphics users.

DXVK had much better performance and less crash for most users, although (on my tests) i've got more input lag
RE: OpenGL vs Vulkan vs DXVK
by Bakon Bot on Wednesday November 3rd 2021, 17:18
This all depends on which hardware is used.
For example, I use AMD Vega integrated graphics and Vulkan runs perfectly for me. On an old AMD graphics card I used, OpenGL ran far better than even Roblox on Windows (couldn't test DXVK because the GPU doesn't support Vulkan but I think OpenGL would still run faster due to lower graphics quality)
RE: OpenGL vs Vulkan vs DXVK
by Josesk Volpe on Thursday November 4th 2021, 1:02
You're right...
Using native OpenGL is the best option for older hardware that doesn't support Vulkan
RE: OpenGL vs Vulkan vs DXVK
by Josesk Volpe on Saturday January 15th 2022, 1:13
Trying on Wine 7.0-rc6, Vulkan has got A LOT better. Performance is still a little worse than on DXVK, but input lag is a lot worse on DXVK, so it's now worth it the change to Vulkan.

Note that it's my experience on my hardware, on my operating system.
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 620
CPU: Intel i3-7100U
RAM: 12GB (4GX + 8GB)
Operating System: Manjaro Linux
Kernel version: Linux 5.15.12-1-MANJARO

Gold?
by Josesk Volpe on Thursday September 30th 2021, 18:50
Why was the latest test report classified as gold?
Like... You need to compile Wine-tkg with a custom patch to solve the cursor issue, wich is a major issue on this software
But the rest works out-of-the-box, other patches like DXVK are optional, so it's most likely a Silver application than a Gold one yet
RE: Gold?
by 4g5wyb on Monday November 1st 2021, 12:30
grapejuices community makes this task far easier
RE: Gold?
by Josesk Volpe on Tuesday November 2nd 2021, 0:56
Yeah, you're right... But the purpose of classifications is to track how Wine works with the software. Grapejuice helps a lot to make heavy configurations for it, but there's still issues wich has no workarounds.

If that were only a issue with the mouse freezing thing, then Roblox Player could be Gold because you can build Wine with a patch to solve that and it would work just alike or better than on Windows. But you'll still face problems with the recording feature, mouse input lag and microstutters depending on the hardware and operating system (For example, i had this problem on Intel HP G47 using Zorin Lite but not on Zorin Core), wich currently has no workaround
Silver means that a application works with some workarounds or out-of-the-box, but has minor issues wich has no workarounds. Gold applications are softwares wich works with some configurations and shows no issues after configuring it.

So i would agree more if Roblox Player were a Silver application.
Mouse lock still not working
by Spyridon Pi on Sunday August 22nd 2021, 10:00
I downloaded the patched version of Wine-tkg but it has the same problem as the Wine-Staging (crashing with an error) the only workaround is with vanila wine (currently 6.15) but the mouse not working need to use alt-tab to unlock .
RE: Mouse lock still not working
by Bakon Bot on Sunday August 22nd 2021, 11:19
From what I've heard, issues with wine-tkg and wine-staging will be fixed in 6.16 (not 100% sure though) so until then, use vanilla Wine. As for the mouse bug in vanilla Wine, I guess we will have to wait until a mouse patch gets added to a future version of Wine.
RE: Mouse lock still not working
by Eureka on Thursday November 4th 2021, 18:14
Unfortunately i haven't heard of anyone making a good enough mouse patch to be submitted to Wine. The mouse patch only works for Roblox and it breaks other games
Mouse issue
by Conner on Sunday July 11th 2021, 23:01
Just chiming in to say that the mouse locking on right-click issue is still present. I've checked on the various Grapejuice pages though and it looks like they're aware of the bug - hopefully it will be fixed soon! Makes playing very difficult if you use a keyboard and mouse
RE: Mouse issue
by Conner on Monday July 12th 2021, 0:38
Edit: The problem seems to be fixed with a patch added to wine-tkg. If you join the GrapeJuice discord channel, there's a link to the patched .pkg file that you can use to either install the patched version of wine (on arch-based systems), or (preferably) extract it somewhere and point to it in grapejuice's config file (that way you don't have to replace your current version of wine)
