What works

Basic building. Lighting works too. Direct3D seems to make Roblox very, very, very ugly so use OpenGL.

You can actually play in your game too, but in Play Solo mode.

Meshes can be seen, including package bodies, hats and gear. Their textures load too.

Saving games work.

What does not

Some areas in Roblox Studio, like the toolbox (known as Insert.. in the old GUI) and web browser, require IE. If you don't have IE, it will display blank.

Shirts and pants love deciding whether they want to work or not.

Smoke caused the whole OS to crash on me.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Super build and inserting models from the hard drive.

Additional Comments

Game freezes temporarily when there is a drastic change in the properties, like clicking a block then clicking Lighting. This is because of the Properties pane lagging up the window, close it for when you are not changing stuff like lighting. Direct3D makes the game look as terrible as hell. If you want to fix this, change the graphicsMode to OpenGL. If you don't like the guest look during gameplay, change the 1 in: http://www.roblox.com/Asset/CharacterFetch.ashx?userId=1&placeId=0 to your user ID (or someone else's if you like ;)), change the characterappearance to the new link (click characterappearance and then edit the link) and you can play your game solo in Linux with your own look. Rotating the camera seems to be a bit jerky with the mouse... You might need a better computer than mine, I was playing on a 2.80Ghz Intel Dual Core processor, 1GB RAM, 32-bit Ubuntu.

HowTo / Notes

Information regarding OpenGL vs DirectX mode

In older versions of Wine, Roblox Player & Studio work far better with OpenGL graphics enabled.

To enable OpenGL mode, open the Roblox Studio, click "File", then "Settings", followed by "Rendering". A prompt will come up saying "Changing settings may make ROBLOX unstable". Click OK. Under the Rendering submenu, change the option "graphicsMode" from "Direct3D" to "OpenGL". Restart Roblox Studio.

The game should now perform much better.

We recommend using Wine 5.0 or higher.

Note about installing Roblox on Linux easily

Running Roblox on Linux is easiest when using a helper script, such as Grapejuice or Roblox Linux Wrapper. You can obtain Grapejuice by clicking this link and Roblox Linux Wrapper by clicking this link. Each project has instructions to follow on how to install Roblox on Linux.

Warning

The Roblox game client is using anti-cheat and security features (VMProtect) that prevent Wine (and other emulators) from connecting to servers.

The client will load up just fine and you will be connected for a brief second but will be forced into a disconnect within 10 seconds.

Can't run on OpenGL Graphic Mode
by SaraParker on Monday May 18th 2020, 2:14
I want to run it on OpenGL graphics but unfortunately, it gives an error i.e. "unable to initialize OpenGL" and it also says that please install the latest driver of OpenGL that was mention in an article of britishcoursework.com however I already update it but this error is persistent. Do you have any solution to this issue?
