Additional Comments

You will need to adjust resolution in the game as every time you start the game you get several error messages about the wrong desktop resolution and needing to update your video driver even though I am running the latest NIVIDIA driver as of 2 days ago. Just click through those as they are false errors. Just install Steam and nothing else. Steam will install DX9 and whatever the game needs.I had to fix my desktop resolution after running the game but only that one time. Once you set the resolution in the game then you only need to fix your desktop resolution that first time and never again. If you exit the game to restart it then you need to exit and restart steam or you get sever sound distortion every time!

HowTo / Notes

Fix for the 'Out of memory' error

1.) When does this happen:

This error is thrown when the game used up all the allocated memory (RAM) and there is no more left to complete the game saving process, and results in a crash and possibly corrupted save games.

2.) Why does this happen:

It usually happens on immense galaxies with abundant planets and many races and units on the map at the same time.

Those conditions result in a huge amount of RAM being used. This game is a 32bit game, which means that it can only access a maximum of 2Gb RAM. (So no, this error is not caused by WINE)

3.) How can this be fixed / worked around:

Luckily, there are tools out there to trick 32bit applications into using 4Gb RAM (which is the maximum amount of RAM that a 32bit system can use as a whole). Even more fortunate is the fact that this game works perfectly with this "patch".

The tool can be downloaded here

Just run "wine 4gb_patch.exe {path_to_game_exe}" and that's it. The tool will automatically back up the original executable so there's no need to do that manually.

After that's done (it should be done in an instant) you can run the game just like you normally would.

4.) Possible issues:

If your system has less or exactly 4Gb RAM and your game will somehow use all of them, this might cause problems for your other applications and possibly even for your operating system, because there may not be any more RAM free for anything on your machine.

I'm not sure how Linux (or Mac) reacts when all RAM is used up, but I'd recommend closing all non-essential applications while playing this game with this path, because this game eats through your RAM like there's no tomorrow when you play on big maps.

If your system has more than 4Gb RAM then there shouldn't be any issue at all.

Just so everyone knows I actually tested about 2:30 am on September28. I just didn't submit it until the next day. I tried to change the date and time but it looks like it didn't take.
Wine newb
by Kaeru on Saturday September 20th 2014, 8:38
So I'm new to the whole "wine" thing. Am I missing something on how to create a wrapper for this game? I've followed all the "how to" guides I could find, but to no avail. I'm trying to get play it on my mac from CD. Anyone have any advice on how to find or create a wrapper so that I can run this game in wineskin?
'Enhanced ship rendering'

Note: "GfxUseEnhancedRendering" variable in Prefs.ini file is the same as 'Enhanced ship rendering' in options of the game's main menu.
Won't start under STEAM
by Mariano on Tuesday September 25th 2012, 19:35
Ubuntu 10.04 64 and 12.04 64, no matter what of the 2 you use, under STEAM, the game can't complete registration. Registering the game on another PC or another OS won't solve the problem. Tried it in both OS and with both wine 1.4 and 1.5.11. Neither case works. :(
RE: Won't start from DVD installed version either...

Tried the DVD version and it doesn't run either. Pressing the "Play" button has no reaction, other than highlighting it. :/

There is an invisible "OK" button at the bottom of the registration window (where you have to enter the e-mail address with which you have an account at stardock.com, your stardock.com-password and the product key). The invisible "OK" button is at the bottom right side of the window. Just try and click several times with the mouse while you are moving the mouse slowly from right to left - not from left to right (because then you will hit the invisible "Cancel" button first).

Forgot some relevant information:
Same error with wine 1.5.10 and the last known working version 1.3.35.
Standard gentoo install for 1.5.10, 1.3.35 is a manual build from source.

It works fine with 1.4.1 on gentoo/amd64

These messages you said about resolution etc happen also to me, but game runs normally.
Game crashes (page fault) on startup
by Dan on Saturday August 11th 2012, 4:24
Bought this via steam a little bit ago and went to try playing it. Install goes fine, trying to run it via steam gives me the registration problems everyone else runs in to. Running directly via the command line (or even just cancelling registration in steam) gives me the warnings about desktop resolution being 0x0, color depth being 0bit, and direct x not enabled (which it looks like other people get as well) but then in page fault's on me and everything crashes. Log is at pastebin.com/Q7v2xqx4

Anyone got any advice?
