As many other people has mentioned before here, there is a problem with the sound. I tried to run winecfg, added PlantsVsZombies.exe to the list, then I went to the Libraries tab and added DSOUND. Now sounds works perfectly for me. I have played through several levels, also fiddled in the options, restarted the game, tabbing back and forth, just to provoke the game to see if the sound disappears again. Still, sound effects and music works just fine. Might be something to try if you happen to have the issues with the sound. Cheers!
