What works
Gaming in general works fine. Zen garden, all the mini-games. I have finished the game. 3D-acceleration finally works in the latest version of wine, (1.3.26) (YAY!) :)
What does not
Sound breaks after a while, or when switching to another window, and then back again. Some times it may happen that the sound comes back for some reason. Not sure what triggers it though. Also on some bonus levels, especially when that crazy Dave is talking, the sound is more likely to disappear. Also in at the final boss it seem impossible for me to get sound to work. The shop is more likely to miss sound too. One that happened to me we the other day was that I was running another program in wine, namely Snes9x 1.43. When I closed snes9x, the sound came back to PVZ. To get the sound back one need to first finish the level that miss sound, and then quit the game. The next level seem to have sound, if lucky.
Workarounds
What was not tested
I have yet not finished the game twice, and I don't have all the stuff from the shop. I have not tried the tree of wisdom yet.

Additional Comments
If you don't have the latest version of wine, make sure to upgrade it as soon as possible. The game runs MUCH smoother with the 3D-acceleration enabled.

The no sound issues came back, but first after playing a lot of levels.
At the title screen the sound works perfectly though, even though I might tab to other windows etc. More or less I have to restart the game before I start a new level.
The game along with wine also suffers from bad speeds and a lot of lag. Probably because you have to disable 3D acceleration, as the game won't run properly at all if you use the 3D acceleration. Mouse get's stuck among other things.
Also, sometimes when you alt+tab or click outside the window (I run the game in windowed mode) the game won't pause automatically.
Anyhow it runs decent enough to play through it, at least this far into the game. I'm currently at level 4-4, and I have also played the mini games this far.
No crashes, besides the sound. And a bit of bad performance. Otherwise it works just fine.
The DSOUND option in the library settings only seem to help a little bit (if at all) in other words.

Immediately upon running, I get
"Cannot read access control list. Error code: 1400"
After closing that error message, it seems to install the rest of the way through, but then I get this message:
"The game is not properly installed. Please reinstall."
Any subsequent reinstall goes exactly the same way, and any attempts to run the game display this last error message again.
