Clearly it wants to run, could be my version of Linux, could be my hardware, not sure, hardware passed the System requirements for Windows though and surpasses in some cases. will try again though

To use the launcher you need to install dotnet20 via winetricks!
Receiving the following?
fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly
L"Microsoft.VC80.CRT" (8.0.50727.762)

Fix by installing vcrun2005sp1 with "winetricks vcrun2005sp1"
If you have nvidia card and are having brightness issues, after entering the game, use the command 'nvidia-settings -l' (in terminal) or just launch the nvidia panel to solve the brightness problem. If the problem appears again, just repeat the command.
For ATI on Ubuntu 10.04 x64 the following works fine;
Go to System->Control Center->ATI Catalyst Control Center->Color and click the Default button. The colors now change back to normal.
Bug 18991 (crash loading a town) fix:
env WINEPREFIX="~/.wine" TZ="America/Bahia" wine "TS3.exe"
Note: It might be best to change America/Bahia to your own TimeZone
Note that Greg Noe was able to download content (at least the Rivertown) by launching the Launcher from within the game, killing the TS3.exe process (launcher won't let you download while the game is running), and then just downloading like usual.

This is what happened to The Sims 3. First, it was a regression in webpage rendering - for some reason it stopped working during 2.x version, but was fixed in newer version of wine (development branch). Now, apparently, there is another regressions that creates graphical glitches in Nvidia cards than happened somewhere between 2.6 and 2.10 version. I am currently in the process of providing additional information for the bug report to wine developers could fix.
But for now yes, you can use an older version of wine to play The Sims. The one I would recommend is oldstable 2.0 wine.
But you don't actually have to install it and use it as your main wine version. What I would suggest is using something like Lutris or PlayOnLinux and select 2.0 as separate wine version.

The game plays perfectly but the graphics looks all washed out like you’re looking through fog.
It’s fine during the EA logo splash screen and the intro movie but as soon as the game itself starts loading the contrast greatly reduces. The game still runs perfectly, I’ve even got the Grim’s Core mod running.
I’ve tried running it in different screen resolutions both in full screen and windowed modes, no change.
I’ve tried deleting my ~/.wine folder and reloading again (and again) with different setups using native wine dll’s and official Microsoft versions and even different mixes of the two. No change.
Running under Widows 7 on the same computer the game plays normally, although it definitely loads and plays a lot quicker in Linux under Wine.
Current best install:
The default Fedora Wine install comes with Winetricks, it’s needed.
Use Wine Config first because it creates your ~/.wine folder, Winetricks calls this your Wine Prefix.
Under the Applications tab set your default Windows version to Windows 7. Under the Graphics tab tick the box to have full screen applications grab the mouse.
Next you need to use a terminal to invoke Winetricks, simply by typing in the command “winetricks†and hitting Enter. Some of the terminology in this program is confusing. You don’t do anything on the first page that opens, it’s already set on “Select the default wine prefixâ€, just hit OK in the bottom right hand corner.
In the next window that opens take the first choice “Install a Windows DLL or component†and hit OK in the bottom right hand corner.
Warning: when I tried to get it to load everything I wanted in one go it crashed. Install only one component at a time.
From this dialog I installed:
d3dx9_31 (version required by TSM mods)
mfc40
vcrun6
Then under the “Install a Font†option of Winetricks I installed:
corefonts
Tahoma
That’s it, a tiny little list. During the install of The Sims Medieval I always hit cancel when it wanted to install DirectX or DotNet. It runs perfectly except for that graphics issue.
The specifications:
Fedora 28
Wine 3.9 – default install from fedora repo
intel Core i5 6500 processor (kaby lake)
using the built in intel graphics
16 Gb Ram – 2133 Mhz
Why such an old game?
I’m trying to work this out for a dear old friend of mine, this and Sims 3 were the only games she ever liked playing and I got her to migrate to Linux several years ago. I’m in the process of loading up a new harddrive for her with the latest Fedora and I thought it would be a nice surprise for her if Wine was already set up properly so that her games could just install with no hassle.
I got This close! She’ll still be happy she can play again but it would be nice if it looked right.

If I indicated that all you need is a vanilla clean wine prefix to get it to work, I apologize. It's been a while since I had to setup a clean prefix, but I will create a step by step procedure that details everything necessary to get it working 100%. There is one component, I forget which one, without which the game launcher absolutely will not work, and I think that is where everyone is getting stuck at.
I also believe the graphics card and driver makes a huge difference. Example, I recently gave my old nVidia 660 to my daugher, and when I did, she started experiencing graphic glitches that I saw with the card (wasn't with Sims, it was a few other games including Ark and L4D)- the problem followed the card, the 660, 650, and 750 series do this. The 1050 and 1060 series do not. Go figure. So today we all use 1050 or 1060 cards.
