What works
I finally discovered that it is not the version of Wine that is the problem...it is simply dependent on a font (or several?). I don't know which one, but if you use winetricks to install ALL fonts, it will install and work without issue (you do have to setup ASIO prior to install). I tested this in many different ways with several different versions, and it works fine with Wine 1.1.23 (latest to date) all the way back to 1.0.6 (I didn't go back any further).
I didn't test every single feature, but it plays multiple VSTs with low
latency (on a real time kernel of course). It loads fast, and did not
crash or hang.
What does not
Nothing (as far as I know).
Workarounds
What was not tested
Only VST load and playback from a USB midi controller was tested. Certain configurations were tested (Mult-processor on/off, buffer, etc.), but not much else.

Additional Comments
I did try this on Suse 11, DreamLinux, and many others with the same problem (it would install but not run) before I discovered the 'install all fonts' solution, so I think it will install fine on those distros.
