HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

In order to get the game working you must enable DirectX 9 instead of DirectX 10:

  • Locate the Engine.ini file (drive_c/Program Files/Ubisoft/Related Designs/ANNO 1404/ or drive_c/users/%username%/Application\ Data/Ubisoft/Anno1404/Config/ )
  • Edit or add a key named DirectXVersion and set the value to 9
  • The file should look similar to this: http://pastebin.com/7E5jSXnA

The game should run flawlessly then...

Doesn't Install
by Tom Heer on Tuesday December 20th 2016, 13:31
Tried it several times with Wine 1.6.2. The installation stalls at "Kopierschutztreiber werden installiert ..." (German for "DRB drivers are being installed ...")
RE: Doesn't Install
by Manu on Tuesday December 20th 2016, 14:50
Try a more recent version of Wine.
The latest stable version is 1.8.6 and will soon be 2.0.0.
While 1.6 should still work on Anno 1404, newer versions might fix your problem.

I'm gonna use a default answer:
try to update your graphics driver
Also I'm not sure about 64-bit systems (I stay with 32) is the /usr/lib32/libGLcore.so really correct? Isn't there a 64-bit driver from nvidia? Or are you just using 64-bit-linux and 32-bit-wine?
Or isn't the lib32 an indicator for 64-bit-systems? I have no idea.
RE: Anno 1404 is not finished starting up..But at least no error occurs directx :)

Install the latest version of nvidia drivers for 64 bit, pass the 172 to the 260 version...
Again fail to direct x.. :(

Now he says this ..

There is a version of wine for 64-bit?

Greetings, thanks for helping.

Maria.

have you changed the directX version to 9 like mentioned in most of the Test Results?
Most of your errors mention dx10 files, so I think this is the reason.

Here are some informations about Wine for 64 bit:

Nothing, I was punished, but I know bad ... if you can, you can not...

I did what I could reinstall the newest gcc version, reinstall the DirectX 9, and did what I could from the instructions on that website, but I have no this directory: S /usr/local/gcc

Thank you so much for everything!

drive_c/Program Files/Ubisoft/Related Designs/ANNO 1404/
what's in this file:

~/.wine/drive_c/Archivos de programa/Ubisoft/Related Designs/ANNO 1404/Engine.ini

is there a line like this:
9
??
If there is a 0 insted of the 9, write a 9 there!
If the file doesn't exist, write this into it: pastebin.com/7E5jSXnA

Beware maybe my path or filename isn't exactly correct, I figured it out of your logs.

Well okay, at least you can read :D.
I have no idea how to help you anymore, if wine64 doesn't help (I don't think it will), you can try to post into winehq-forums: forums.winehq.org/ maybe you'll get some help there.

Only thing left: use a clean wineprefix and only install d3dx9 with winetricks (and maybe Anno).
RE: Anno 1404 is not finished starting up..But at least no error occurs directx :)
by salamandra on Tuesday January 25th 2011, 13:54
This is very rare, to use WINEPREFIX I have to install wine 1.0, and then upgraded to wine 1.3.12 winetricks "wiki.winehq.org/winetricks_es" use and nothing that does not work ... And use this "wiki.winehq.org/Native_D3DX9"

Again has to try everything from the beginning, there is no other.

Thank you very much for your time and trouble you, thank you very much.

RE: Anno 1404 is not finished starting up..But at least no error occurs directx :)
by Manu on Tuesday January 25th 2011, 14:07
nothing to thank me for.
I have a little suggestion:
if you want to post code or console logs, post them on e.g. pastebin.com/ and post the link here
Also I don't understand why you have to install 1.0 - 1.2.2 is stable afaik and 1.3.whatever is development (which most people use - atleast I do) 1.0 is very old and shouldn't still be in most actual distributions.
There's no need to upgrade, just install the newest version.
To make a new wineprefix you don't need the deprecated wineprefixcreate (or whatever it was called) just let wine use a not existing directory and it will fill it with a clean wineprefix. e.g.:
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_clean wine explorer /desktop=,800x600
will first create a new wineprefix in ~/.wine_clean and will open an empty desktop after (you can close that ofc).

I uninstalled the game, I use wine 1.3.9 that is what this page says hehe. The truth that I do not understand anything ... this is very difficult for me, there are other games that are easier .. maybe install it for when it is easiest to do in following versions of wine or whatever.

Thanks for everything, will get it someday ;)
"Failed to initalize Direct X"
by Lukas T on Monday October 11th 2010, 11:40
I'm still not getting this to work.
I am using Winebottler for Mac. After I installed Anno1404, I applied winetrick "d3dx9", and then tried to override "dbghelp". So I started winecfg, and a window popped up. I witched to the tab "Libraries" (Thats how it looks like in Winebottler) and searched for existing overrides. As there was none, I created a new one "dbghelp", and edited it to be "Native(Windows)".
This didn't work, as well as typing "dbghelp.dll".

Do you have any suggestions?

Unplayable slow

Thanks to the instructions here, I managed to get it working by overriding dbghelp and editing Engine.ini. But it's unplayable slow. I get maybe 5-10 fps even with lowest settings. I think it should run smoother with GeForce 7600 GS gfx card and Athlon 3000+ processor. Any tips?

Things i've already done: winetricks d3dx9, regedit->DirectDrawRenderer OpenGL

Maybe it's a CPU problem and not GPU, because the loading times are also very high, it takes ~ 5 minutes to load up a game

Need admin rights
by nonow on Wednesday November 11th 2009, 5:09
Hello,

when I try to launch Anno4.exe, I've a messagebox that says me that i need the administrator rights to launch the apps for the first time.

How you get over this?

Thanks
RE: Need admin rights
by motku on Monday December 14th 2009, 23:27
I wonder the same too. I'd wager that message is the Tages over-ride.

Now, it's stated we need a no dvd crack to get this game going. I looked for one on the web, I assume it works. It's sad that we non-windows users must use the tools of pirates to get our purchased games to play.

That being said, it seems to over-ride this issue for me. But I have another issue on top of this, one that I think is WINE related over-all.

And I swear I did a clean re-install of WINE for this game alone.

I can get the Auto-Run to bring up a window. I can choose "Play" from this window, which fires up the gu.exe. And then the game attempts to start, and never opens. How do I fix this? I assume it's something I've over-looked.
directx

When starting the game I get a textbox saying "DirectX failed to initialize. Anyone experienced the same problem?

I've tried installing DirectX through winetricks.
RE: directx

I've the same problem.

Note that first time I've this :
$ wine Anno4.exe
fixme:ntoskrnl:KeInitializeTimerEx stub: 0x1310a8 0
err:module:import_dll Library d3dx10_40.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\ANNO 1404\\Anno4.exe") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\\Program Files\\ANNO 1404\\Anno4.exe" failed, status c0000135

Then I copied missing DLL directly from my Windows Vista installation to .wine/

cp d3dx10_40.dll ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32

After that copy, when I launch the game, the same error appear "Failed to initialize Direct X"

Can someone help us?
RE: directx

Same thing happened to me. One day game is working perfectly, and the other it won't start.
RE: directx
by solem on Tuesday November 3rd 2009, 3:13
I got it working now. Had to start all over.

- Installed Anno, note at the end Anno installs its own DirectX version
- Replaced the executable with the crack/no-cd
- Started wine config library and added the dbghelp.dll, then set it to native

Game works now. A tad slower than on Windows, but it works.

I had the same problem with wine .31 & .32. I switched back to wine .27 and Anno runs fine.

- wine 1.1.27
- winetricks d3dx9
- override dbghelp.dll to native
- crack & run Anno4 without DirectX failure

best regards,

Christoph

I just got this error after updating from wine 1.1.30 to 1.1.35.
The problem just seemed logicaly to me, because there is a little support for DX10 added meanwhile.
So I googled: "how to change annos dx mode" and I found it instantly ;).
Changing it back to DX9 will fix this problem.
The reason why DX9 was chosen for older wine-releases may be that wine just tought the programs "hey, DX10, never heard of that" ;).

The solution:
edit this file:
~/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/your\ username/Anwendungsdaten/Ubisoft/Anno1404/Config/Engine.ini
and change this line:
0
into this:
9

I had the same problem. Tried to set the DX version but that wasn't enough. Then I set the resolution in the Engine.ini file to the same as my desktop, and it worked. No direct X problem.

Anno not starting

Used fresh 1.1.30 wine install on Ubuntu with ATI Graphics.
Installed DirectX9 from winetricks, set gbdhelp.dll to NATIVE(Windows) and added following registry keys:
"DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl"
"OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"
"PixelShaderMode"="enabled"
"UseGLSL"="disabled"
"VertexShaderMode"="hardware"
"VideoMemorySize"="256"

Had the same problem on Debian/Lenny

This solution worked for me:

Manually creating the registry key "VideoMemorySize" and setting it to 256 worked for me.

Look at wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys for more infos about setting registry keys.
RE: Black Window

thx, but who in the registry ?
RE: Black Window
by Alexander Watzinger on Sunday August 30th 2009, 7:01
Assuming you meant where in the registry ...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D

But like I said, just look at:

wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys

its a good description and should answer all your questions how (and where) to make this registry key.

with ATI Cards

After hours of troubleshooting

if you have an ati card try the following:

from the command line launch regedit:
wine regedit
add a string value called "useGLSL" and set it to "disabled" to the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D

After an hour of gameplay, however, the graphics gliched to totally unplayable
Missing Fonts
by Markus Sinner on Wednesday July 22nd 2009, 15:16
The main menu did not show any fonts. No intro at all.

I had to edit the Engine.ini and set from "data" to "Ger". After that, the game runs fine, and the intro is shown.
RE: Missing Fonts
by Daniel Rotter on Monday March 22nd 2010, 8:11
I had the same Problem... The menu also doesn't show any images. I suppose you have changed this settings between GUIDefinitionFolder. But it didn't change anything... I have no intro and instead of the menu a bright yellow background, with a working cursor.
Installing & Nvidia GT8800 - observations
by Steve De Caux on Wednesday July 22nd 2009, 3:22
Hi everybody, just like to add a couple of comments...

1. installing
- clean install of wine, winetricks install DX9
instead of just running setup.exe, I entered
> WINEDLLOVERRIDES="mscoree=" wine setup.exe
-> this prevents the directx install from taking forever

2. graphics setup for GT8800

2.1 regedit - see wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys
2.1.1 DirectDrawRenderer set to opengl - speeds the graphics up considerably
2.1.2 OffscreenrenderingMode has to be set to fbo (if entered - fbo is the default) - backbuffer messes up the fog of war and the minimap display, pbuffer causes crash

2.1.3 VideoMemorySize - I normally set this, but seems to make no difference to Anno 1404, because it creates BenchMark.xml (in install directory) as it installs & uses the values recorded there - you can run tools/Benchmark.exe from install dir to redo it.

2.2 Anno 1404 Options-Graphics
- the install sets graphics to medium for the GT8800
set Shadow Quality off - if I don't, the overall display is darker and the yellows seem to be missing

2.3 graphic artifacts - any help greatfully recieved
- the warehouse menu doesn't display the items, fill bar, and amounts aligned correctly. Same for each of the production buildings. This is a bit annoying, as it's hard to read the tonnage amounts due to superimposed borders.
- the shipyard menu has a mis-alignment between the build-completion 'clock' and the inner ship selection. No big deal.

Longest continuous play so far was 6 hours, by the end of that time the game was stuttering noticably, but subsequent reload (next day) solved the problem.
I have not had any crashes or lock-ups yet, so it looks like pure gold under wine, IMHO !

...and a new feature just discovered
setting Options/graphics/Water quality to high+caustics nade it look nice, but after stopping the game it would not start.

I had to edit the engine.ini by hand to reset the level to 2, then the game started again OK

I have a Intel Q6600 with a Nvidia 8800GT and Debian Lenny.
I installed Wine 1.1.26 to see if it was just the old version under which it doesn't work.

I tried all your comments on how to get the game to work but it doesn't.
When installing DirectX i got an error about mscoree.dll
(even though i copied mscoree.dll from an existing winxp installation and set it to native, also tried to register the dll with regserv) but it installs anyway and dxdiag shows an installed directx 9.0c (last version from march 2009). I don't think that this is why the game doesn't work.
(i set dbghelp.dll to native and copied the patch)

At first i got some sound error, pcm and such but i got rid of it by checking all possible sound devices in the wine config.

But now all i get when starting the game is:

fixme:ntoskrnl:KeInitializeTimerEx stub: 0x113fc8 0
fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unimplemented action: 59 (SPI_SETSTICKYKEYS)
fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unimplemented action: 51 (SPI_SETFILTERKEYS)

What i tried is:

Deactivating / Activating Vertex Shaders and/or Pixel Shaders.
Setting DirectDrawRenderer to opengl
Setting OffscreenrenderingMode to fbo

I tried having only an DLL Override for dbghelp.dll
and having DLL overrides for the following dlls (got that from a tutorial on how to install directx - www.wine-reviews.net/microsoft/directx-90c-march-2008-redistributable-on-linux-with-wine.html used that but installed the current version, 9.0c March 2009)

RE: Installing & Nvidia GT8800 - observations
by Steve De Caux on Monday July 27th 2009, 3:26
Hey Asgaroth,

sorry to hear you have probs.

One question : did you use winetricks to install dx9 on a clean copy of wine ? - you need to use the "d3dx9" option, NOT the "directx9" option. Also, see wiki.winehq.org/winetricks for how to get the latest version.

From looking at your listing, you are missing some of the important d3dx9_ libraries, ie 37 to 41.

In my wine config, ONLY the d3dx9_ libs are overridden to native (plus dbghelp, but I have this in the Anno profile)

Before you do a new install of wine (easiest way to fix yr lib overrides), you need to delete all of the current wine stuff from yr hard disk - otherwise bits & pieces left in temp files can make life miserable. Have a look at wiki.winehq.org/FAQ section 5 for a list of the directories/files used by wine - you can cut & paste this into a shell script to make life easy.

One other note : make sure you don't override dbghelp until AFTER the game is installed !

Hope this helps
Cheers
Steve

Problem solved by myself.

I think the problem was my twinview.

I took my windows config with window mode and the game works well now :-)

Could you describe what you did for getting the game wo work?

If some more could confirm it is working with wine, i will buy this game and hope it will work.
Sims 3 doesn't work on my machine. Don't know why :(
RE: Give us a detailed HowTo please
by Christopher Boehm on Tuesday July 14th 2009, 16:44
1. start with a fresh ~/.wine
2. install the game (there will be no problems)
3. type "winecfg" -> go to "libraries" -> type in "dbghelp.dll" -> select "native"
4. copy over the no-dvd-crack
5. enjoy the game

so, you see there is actually nothing special to do, except the dll-override, but this is a known problem of all "anno"-games.

Beside you see that the "full"-Version becomes gold-rating from 3 testers, only the "demo"-Version was garbage.

I made first 4 steps, and all the time have error:

"The drivers required installation ( with an administrator's account )."
RE: Give us a detailed HowTo please
by Mark Karpeles on Friday July 17th 2009, 19:39
This means you didn't crack the executable, and it's trying to install TAGES drivers (which obviously doesn't work well on a non-windows system)
RE: Give us a detailed HowTo please
by Martin Weinelt on Monday July 20th 2009, 6:46
Additionally you need to enable Vertex Shaders in the graphics tab of winecfg!

Anyway, it is still kind of slow on my system and the mouse cursor sometimes disappears.
