What does not
The browser crashes under several conditions:
- On first run
- When attempting to use the address bar
- When clicking the home or search buttons in the toolbar
- When loading some web pages, such as WineHQ's forum
- when given a URL as a command line parameter
Also, nothing happens when attempting to add a page to favorites or create a shortcut on the desktop.

Additional Comments
This is my recipe to install this version of IE - I suggest using a dedicated wineprefix for this (IE3 replaces some system DLLs with native ones from the 90s, which may conflict with more modern programs): 1. Open winecfg and change the reported Windows version to Windows 95. 2. Switch to the libraries tab and add native,builtin overrides for these libraries: iexplore.exe, hlink, jscript, mshtml, shdocvw, urlmon, vbscript 3. Switch back to the applications tab and click "add application," type "infinst2.exe" (no quotes) as the file name in the add file dialog, and click OK. 4. With infinst2.exe still highlighted, switch to the libraries tab again, add a shell32 override, and edit it to change the load order to "native (Windows)." 5. Run the installer. Allow it to "reboot your computer" at the end (this will really only reboot your Wine session). 6. Run the browser from a terminal like so: wine 'C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe' On the first run, you need to disable the default browser check. IE3 will crash afterward, but should work on subsequent runs, aside from the problems noted above (or not yet discovered?).

This note was originally added to IE Version 5, but may be relevant to all versions.
Don't run IE on an RW mounted DOS partition !
Pretty problematic directory renaming/corruption can happen.
This seems to happen if Wine doesn't have access to certain Windows registry keys.
Renames e.g. "Program Files" to "$!$!$!$!.pfr" and does other horrible things.
BTW, it does not only happen with IE, as it seems to be a generic Windows
Setup process of Explorer which is doing this, which can be launched
under multiple circumstances.
To be safe, use a backup copy only, i.e. copy all relevant windows files over
e.g. to an ext2 partition.
