What works

The game plays fine -- I haven't noticed any issues once logged in and playing.

What does not

The installer does not run. You must install in Windows and copy the game directory over into Wine. I installed the game on XP under VirtualBox, patched there and copied the directory over after all files were up to date. (BTW, the game WILL NOT run under VBox, so don't even bother trying -- VBox emulates video drivers and therefore does not meet the requirements to run the game.)

You must also install d3dx9 through winetricks to get the game running.

The patcher (uopatch.exe) does not always start. You may need to try a few times to get it running. If you have trouble, check your processes -- it does not always cleanly unload. If you are watching your process viewer, you will know that its going to run if uopatch.exe starts, shuts down and is replaced by uopatch.bin. If this does not happen, the patcher will not start -- just kill the process and start over. Once running, it will recognize that the game is up to date and allow you to start it. It is much easier to just run the client directly (UOSA.exe) and fiddle with the patcher only when an update is available.

Splash wallpaper during load is resized incorrectly.

Text on buttons in UI is chopped off on bottom or top, but not so much that you can't read the text. Just annoying.

Workarounds

What was not tested

The actual patching process. There hasn't been an update since I got the client working ;-)

However, I recommend keeping your Win install of the SA client handy, patching there and copying the new files over when needed.

Problems with mouse

This can be solved for some clients by setting "MouseThread=off" in every uo.cfg (there are many for each character and one global).

Problems running uo.exe

You can safely use client.exe for the game and run uopatch.exe from time to time manually.

Connecting to free shards

You have to disable encryption for your client:

1. Either you can find already patched client for your shard (browse the shard forums). And you can run it like the normal one (tested by Plague).
2. Or you can patch the client yourself using UO Rice (some say this can be only done on Windows and before any patching) and then run the patched client. (suggested by sk8dork, not tested by Plague).
