What works

UOClassicSetup_7_0_24_0.exe.  Just put it in your Program Files folder and run it.  CHECKING for updates.  client.exe (which authenticates the account, connects to the world servers, and runs the game) seems to work flawlessly.  Actual gameplay, once the game is installed by uo.exe (see What does not work) all appears to work, but I have not exhaustively tested it.

What does not

That first update, which actually installs most of the game files.  The updater, uo.exe, shows up Program Files\Electronic Arts\Ultima Online Classic.  It never finishes before crashing.  My workaround was to run that part of the installation using Wine 1.4.1 in my Debian Wheezy install.  This is workable because I have a separate partition for Windows software, that gets mounted to ~/.wine/drive_c/Programs during boot, either by fstab or by a mount -U statement in /etc/rc.local

What was not tested

Most gameplay.  I did all of that in Debian Wheezy.  Any third-party software.  There have been no new updates to install since installing the game.

Problems with mouse
This can be solved for some clients by setting "MouseThread=off" in every uo.cfg (there are many for each character and one global).
Problems running uo.exe
You can safely use client.exe for the game and run uopatch.exe from time to time manually.
Connecting to free shards
You have to disable encryption for your client:
  1. Either you can find already patched client for your shard (browse the shard forums). And you can run it like the normal one (tested by Plague).
  2. Or you can patch the client yourself using UO Rice (some say this can be only done on Windows and before any patching) and then run the patched client. (suggested by sk8dork, not tested by Plague).
