Everything works to my knowledge: Neverwinter Nights II, Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir install from DVD out of the box. Autoupdate works out of the box after right-clicking and selecting "dedicated internet connection".Game starts only after installing vcrun2005, dotnet20 and directx9 via winetricks. Single player works great, as far as I can tell (tested character creation, tutorial, chapter 1 of the original campaign, Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir, including overland map).
Ok, here are our (ubuntu-gr.org) install steps.
Install latest wine and winetricks.
Run winetricks in terminal and install vcrun2005, dotnet20 and directx9. I'm really not sure which first, and I had some mixed experiences, buggy behavior after trying to update .NETFramework to 3.5 or even 4. Does not seem to work; don't know why.
Add devenum.dll, dxdiagn.dll and mscorree.dll to override in libraries tab (native, builtin).
Install Neverwinter Nights II, don't patch, install Mask of the Betrayer, don't patch, yet. Backup /home/.wine/dosdevice/c:/Programm Files/Atari/Neverwinter Nights 2/Data/VO_X1.zip) file, install Storm of Zehir, don't patch yet, restore VO_X1.zip file to original location. Run autopatcher, right click on logo and check “dedicated internet connectionâ€.
Patch all the way to last patch.
Fire up the game and enjoy!
What does not
Everything seemed to work after installing vcrun2005, dotnet20 and directx9 via winetricks and changing some settings in winecfg (see additional comments below)
What was not tested
Tested on kubuntu 10.10 I enabled "emulate a virtual desktop" with highest resolution (ATI Radeon HD 4800 series, 1280X1024) in winecfg, also checked all other options in the same tab, like pixel shader and hardware support for the graphics card. Sound: The standard Wine Alsa driver works perfectly. Graphics: No problems, ATI Radeon HD 4800 series with closed (proprietary driver). Bugs, well, it was a buggy game in native OS, too, out of the box. You have to patch fast to make it less buggy. Seems to take ages to exit the game, but closes responding to ALT+F4, so that I can return to the ubuntu desktop environment faster. Patching: Remember the Storm of Zehir introduced a bug that wipes a rather large 300 MB voice and conversations file from Mask of the Betrayer. Backup it up first and restore before patching all the way up to the latest and final patch. Enjoy! :!:
