HowTo / Notes

HOWTO
  • Use a recent Wine, 1.1.39 works fine
  • Apply this hack* (made for 1.1.39) and compile Wine from source
  • Update WA to to the latest beta version (tested with 3.6.29.0)
  • Configure Wine to be in desktop mode with the desired resolution you want to play in (optional but recommended)
  • Remember to use GDI as the DirectDrawRenderer rather than OpenGL, otherwise you'll get the same black screen bug even with the patch:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
    "DirectDrawRenderer"="gdi"

Some known problems:

  • When failing a mission or completing a ranked deathmatch game and returning to the menu you can't click on anything and hitting ESC will get you back to the main menu but the game will instantly crash.
  • If you run WA in real fullscreen with no wine desktop you need to ALT-TAB in each menu to get a focus.
* DO NOT SUBMIT TEST RESULTS FOR HACKED WINE.  THIS NOT A TRUE REPRESENTATION OF WINE'S ABILITIES

Hacked Wine test results
by Ken Sharp on Thursday October 6th 2011, 9:19
What is the hack for? If it is to install, then the test results should be changed to "Work around" for the installer. If it is to run the game then they need to be removed as they are not a representation of Wine's capabilities.
RE: Hacked Wine test results
by Vladimir Panteleev on Thursday October 6th 2011, 9:22
Not sure which test results specifically are you talking about, but this version of the game is mostly obsolete. A newer version of the game which does not require Wine hacks has been released for over a year, and is currently the only version allowed online on the official WormNET server.
For wine 1.2
by ValdikSS on Monday August 2nd 2010, 2:25
bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=17739 is 100% working!
Here is patched wined3d.dll.so for wine 1.2
rghost.ru/2249287
Put it to /usr/lib/wine/
No .dll hacks required, better to remove it if you tried to use it, they are all useless.

SWEET!!! will check this and reply back as soon as i get my laptop back - my HD failed lol.
RE: For wine 1.2
by Giacomo on Thursday August 5th 2010, 13:56
Really good! In my case I had to put file also in /usr/lib32/wine/ and /usr/lib/wine/
RE: For wine 1.2
by Giacomo on Thursday August 5th 2010, 14:11
Sry, /usr/lib32/wine/ and /usr/lib64/wine/
RE: For wine 1.2
by Lionel Fothergill on Tuesday February 8th 2011, 7:57
how do I apply the stuff from your attachment?? Without it, WA's not working so far. (Wine-Version 1.2.2, WA-Version 3.6.31.0 Beta)

thx
RE: For wine 1.2
by Lionel Fothergill on Tuesday February 8th 2011, 7:59
forgot to mention the error message I get whenever starting WA:

*** Error *** from graphics subsystem, unable to set the desired video mode
RE: For wine 1.2
by ValdikSS on Tuesday February 8th 2011, 8:01
You're using latest version of worms armageddon and it doesn't need patching. The game should ask you about wine overrides, if not, use reg files from "Tweaks" folder. ForceWineVirtualDesktop_On.reg and FrontendUseDesktopWindow_Enable.reg should be enough.
RE: For wine 1.2
by Lionel Fothergill on Tuesday February 8th 2011, 9:10
I tried the reg files, but didn't work :(
RE: For wine 1.2
by ValdikSS on Tuesday February 8th 2011, 9:15
OK, try to run it with this command:
wine explorer.exe /desktop,800x600 /path/to/wa.exe
RE: For wine 1.2
by Vladimir Panteleev on Tuesday February 8th 2011, 8:00
These patches only apply for versions of W:A before 3.6.29.0. Versions starting with 3.6.30.0 have them built-in as an advanced option, which is enabled by default when running under Wine.
RE: For wine 1.2
by Lionel Fothergill on Tuesday February 8th 2011, 9:49
OK, it uninstalled it, reinstalled it, applied 3.6.31.0 and it worked. only thing is, I still have to burn a cd to begin... -.-

But many thanks for your advice!
RE: For wine 1.2
by Lionel Fothergill on Wednesday February 9th 2011, 13:50
Ok, now with a cd it works fine - only thing is a sound problem. I have sound in menus, but as soon as I start a game, there's no sound.
RE: For wine 1.2
by Lionel Fothergill on Tuesday February 15th 2011, 16:40
Any ideas on that sound problem? it's part of the fun y'know...
RE: For wine 1.2

Oh and only ALSA is marked.
RE: For wine 1.2
by Lionel Fothergill on Tuesday February 15th 2011, 17:04
Oh ok, set it to hardware emulation in wine's audio control panel and it worx! dunno why that didn't work last time I changed it tho...

How do I apply the Wine patch?
ddraw.dll & user32.dll for Wine 1.1.44 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard
by Isaac Xa on Sunday June 27th 2010, 14:49
• Update WA to to the latest beta version (tested with 3.6.29.0)
• Configure Wine to be in desktop mode with the desired resolution you want to play in (optional but recommended)
• Remember to use GDI as the DirectDrawRenderer:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
"DirectDrawRenderer"="gdi"

• Put the custom ddraw.dll and user32.dll in the Worms Armageddon directory: sites.google.com/site/wormsfiles/worms_armageddon_ddraw_user32.zip?attredirects=0&d=1
RE: ddraw.dll & user32.dll for Wine 1.1.44 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

...and now it's showing a black screen again, for some reason.

any updates on this? unfortunately doesn't work for me either.. using wine 1.2
RE: ddraw.dll & user32.dll for Wine 1.1.44 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

It turns out I was running Worms Armageddon in a Crossover Games bottle.
Download the trial version of Crossover Games (www.codeweavers.com/products/cxgames/download_trial/) and copy the drive_c hierarchy, then select it as a prefix with Wine. Everything works except for focus-stealing in some online menus.
ddraw.dll & user32.dll for wine 1.1.38

Same as before, for anyone who wants them.

files.jargonia.co.uk/ddraw_and_user32_patches_for_wine_1.1.38.tar.bz2

Still haven't managed to get into an actual game, menus work though.

any update on this hack?
ddraw.dll/user32.dll for wine 1.1.35
by Mark Karpeles on Sunday January 17th 2010, 3:34
If anyone wants them:

beta.magicaltux.net/ddraw_and_user32_patches_for_wine_1.1.35.tar.bz

I still haven't managed to reach play mode with worms (I'm hitting some bug), but at least menu are displayed and everything else seems to be working.

by Alexander on Monday November 9th 2009, 5:12
You said fullscreen works too but when i tried to play in it keyboard didn't work in game. Also game freezes when Play Again or New Match is pressed at the end on match.

Please, test this game with 1.1.13! Without a patch. Maybe 2082 was fixed! See the bug's page.

No win.
Working setup with almost recent Wine
by hifi on Monday December 8th 2008, 12:10
I have done some regression testing and wrote a few workarounds for bugs in recent Wine releases.

However, Wine 1.1.3 and newer ones suffer from bug 15789 which slows down the game to the point where it's not playable so the best candidate now is 1.1.2.

Here is a patch for 1.1.2 which workarounds these issues:
* Black screen bug 2082 (remember to set DirectDrawRenderer to GDI)
* Submenus crash the game, like weapon settings and team creation
* Starting SP missions or training freezes the game (a dev is working to fix it for good)

Hey, interesting to package it with wine.
I did'nt compile it myself but the three patches seem to work. My problem was that the precompiled dlls don't fit my wine version/installation. Now, I can play again without effort.
