What works

Almost everything I tested works. See the 'What does not work' section to see the details of the minor features that do not work (I gave platinum as those features don't effect that much in the wine/µtorrent experience).

What does not

(1.) - The start/pause/preferences buttons backgrounds are black if you use custom toolbar skin (at least with the skin I tested), not gray (in ccleaner it helped if you used win 98 or higher but not with µtorrent).

(2.) - The trackers are kinda slow to update.

(3.) - When you move the sideways bar, the 'Done' bar thingy with the blue-white design and percent of the download will move with it, instead of staying where it should be.

(The numbers refer to 'Extra Comments' section where I explain why I still gave platinum to µtorrent 2.0 beta.)

What was not tested

I only tested downloading one torrent and basic features ( so auto shutdown, scheduler, web ui, advanced section and stuff like that was not tested but I believe they will work just fine :) ).

Additional Comments

- I ran µtorrent on all windows modes but I guess it would be 'safe' to run wine on lower modes (like win2k and lower ones).. - I myself will continue running µtorrent on win 2.0 mode as it works so well. - I had imported my former windows vista settings and they worked perfectly except I needed to change the download location. - It's nice to see that when you right click a torrent and select "Open Containing Folder", the wine file manager no longer keeps opening another copy of itself every 5 seconds. - The wine file manager is still incomplete so it would be better if the folders could be opened with regular linux file manager. Here's the explanations for why I gave platinum: 1. This does not really affect the user experience in µtorrent. If you find the black boxes annoying, you can either use Vuze or the default toolbar skin. 2. In most cases adding 1 to 3 trackers is enough. People think that the more trackers you have - the bigger download speed you have. This is not the case. If you have something like 20 trackers, you are only adding bandwith to the trackers - it will NOT improve your download speed. With µtorrent 2.0 beta you might want to try the udp trackers too (just replace http://... with udp://...). 3. Yes, this is kinda 'silly' bug but this isn't really that big of a deal. HowTo / Notes

If/When you get this error:

It seems like uTorrent is already running, but not responding. Please close all uTorrent processes and try again.

you could simply kill all the utorrent processes with:

killall -9 uTorrent.exe

Then just open utorrent, not the installer.

You can also open µtorrent with '/NOINSTALL' parameter but then you can't change any settings (if I understood right). E.g.:

C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe" /NOINSTALL

HOWTO associate in Linux .torrent files with uTorrent
Use a script like this:
QUICKPARLOCATION="c:\\Program Files\\uTorrent\\uTorrent.exe"
if [ $# -eq 0 ]; then
  PARAM=`winepath -w "$*"`
Put it in one of the directories in your PATH, for example /usr/bin, make it executable, and finally set .torrent files to open with this script.

Confirmed CPU
by Abdusamed on Friday October 15th 2010, 23:38
OKay, this is happening to me alot. Initially, wine 1.1.42 with utorrent 1.8.5 was working fine. But I encountered the same bug/error/glitch which I had encountered long before, some 3 formats ago! Same error, high cpu for no reason at all. It use to idle, like right now at 3 or 4 cpu but for reason it would spike to 100! It's not rechecking hash or anything it just shoots up! After google the bug, I found out that I should try updating. So I first update the utorrent which seems to fix the bug but after some use, SPIKE 100 CPU..which lags my system alot! Now I updated wine using ppa.. 1.2... the spike is gone. But 2 mins spiked again and I had to killall -9 uTorrent.exe and restart utorrent! What's the problem????

My experience with Utorrent 2.0 on Mint
by Mark Capehart Jr. on Sunday October 11th 2009, 17:43
I'm running Linux Mint 6 (based from Ubuntu 8.10 [Intrepid Ibex]). Running WINE 1.1.31 Utorrent 2.0 beta works perfect for me. Everything is fully functional. Skinning works perfect.

The only flaw that I see is when I mouseover the system tray icon, it flickers a bit, but that is cosmetic & does not take away from the functionality at all.

Using the stable 1.0.1 version of WINE I got the "This program is freeware. If you paid for it you have been scammed and you should get a refund." message every time I opened it... After upgrading my WINE version to the 1.1.31 version, I saw this message only once, as intended.
