What works

Just about everything

What does not

Dashed lines appear solid on printer (I think this is fixed on-screen now).  Some functions and tools are exceedingly dog slow to the point of forcing me to get up and work on it at school (where the have Macs with the same stuff).  This may be partially due to a poor windows implementation (unconfirmed).

Sound buffers appear to be corrupted often during playback, causing odd artifacts here and there (sound cutting out for about 5-10ms at a time every 40 or 50 ms).

Tuplets are bugged (try 7x 1/8th notes in the place of 4), but this is on all platforms.

Workarounds

What was not tested

  • Entering music from a MIDI device (and all of the related MIDI continuous controllers, velocities, aftertouch, etc.)
  • Entering music using digital audio input (i.e., a microphone)
  • Did not test install on this version (was tested on previous version and it worked)

Additional Comments

It should be able to get a Gold - it does appear to work "flawlessly" from a functional standpoint. What's holding it back is the speed at which it delivers this. I have often "clicked too many times" and I had to wait out as it attempted to service each of those clicks. Sadly, some of my clicks (that were sane at the time I made them) eventually got transfered to GUI components that had subsequently appeared over the target area, causing my clicks to do the wrong thing. This is why I'm holding it back from gold -- the speed of that functionality is far too low to be considered flawless (especially since it tends to induce errors) I have 1.3.35 installed on my system now, so next semester, when I'm using finale again, I'll do another review on how it's working there.

Sluggish?
by Joachim Lublin on Friday February 12th 2010, 10:12
It seems to work in Ubuntu karmic (wine 1.0.1-0ubuntu8) but as soon as I open a document everything gets real sluggish when the document need to render (menus floating over it and such)

Any such problem in newer versions of wine?

Also MIDI-input seems to work really fine.

On wine 1.1.38, finale ran sluggish at first, after computer restart worked great~ Also on karmic (mint 8).

by midi input do you mean HyperScribe ? For me HyperScribe works but there is a slight delay between keyboard input and computer (in windows too). Are you hooked directly into a midi interface, usb, or sound card?

lastly, any success installing the Garritan Orchestra with 1.0.1?

best,
gs
