Additional Comments

It IS possible to get iTunes 9 to work without completely freezing. Although I'm not entirely sure how I did it. First I decided to install iTunes 7.2 by doing this: 1.) Install latest version of Wine. 2.) Download winetricks using: wget www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks 3.) Move winetricks to /usr/local/bin and mark as executable. 4.) Run winetricks by typing 'winetricks' into the terminal, choose MDAC25, and install. 5.) Install iTunes 7.2 After that, I got iTunes 7.2 to work, which worked fine but I wanted to see if I could get iTunes 9 to work. I installed iTunes 9.2.1 as normal, and I was surprised to see it load up. However, like for many others, it just freezes upon startup and nothing is clickable. The only way to truly kill it was to press ALT+F2 and type "killall iTunes.exe". I got fed up with that so I decided to try and reinstall iTunes 7.2. For the most part, the iTunes installer works fine, but it's extremely buggy when it comes to the Repair/Remove menu that comes up when you try to install the older iTunes. When clicking Repair, it simply hangs and then brings up a new installer window. When clicking remove, instead of removing iTunes, it starts installing iTunes. I just let it install iTunes, figuring it should work. Instead what I got was still iTunes 9.2.1, only this time it actually functions! Pretty much it works almost as good as iTunes 7.2. I've rated iTunes 9.2.1 as Bronze since there are still some issues that cause the program to screw up. For one, sometimes the window still sort of freezes, and the only way to fix this is to click outside of the window and then click within it again. Not too bad, and it only happens sometimes. Of course sometimes you'll do something that will cause the program to freeze, and the only way to fix it is to press ALT+F2 and type "killall iTunes.exe". Force quit doesn't entirely get rid of the iTunes process. Don't even bother with the Store. It just freezes the entire program, which is a shame since that's the easiest way of getting Podcasts. I couldn't test the CD support because it doesn't seem to read CDs, but I think that's because I disabled autoplay during the iTunes setup, so I can't be sure if it works or not. I don't know how to re-enable autoplay. I no longer have an iPod, so I don't know if the program has iPod support. Still, apparently people have gotten iPods to work with other versions of iTunes in linux, so it's quite likely that this version of iTunes can or will eventually support iPods. This also means there's hope for those out there with iProducts. Sound plays beautifully. Other than the minor bugs and the store not working, the program works very fast and seems pretty functional considering it's an Apple product made to run on Windows which is running in Wine.

I run Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome-Shell 3 on an Atom (Samsung netbook); I not want to waste my time and hard earned money on Windows or Mac, however I have an iPhone and I've seen a few nice pieces online of ways to sync some features (aka your iTunes library with Rhythmbox and iPhone photos with F-Spot) but I want the full iTunes on Linux. I don't mind running it through Wine but I doubt an Atom can handle a dual-boot or VMWare.

Any suggestions/solutions?

SuperUser.com has a workaround to get iTunes running inside VirtualBox with full USB and iPhone support:
superuser.com/questions/70943/sync-iphone-in-windows-xp-running-as-virtualbox-guest-under-ubuntu-9-10

I know this is no solution for Wine, but it's a useful workaround for those who need it.

The lowest down result is bogus, read it. An admin needs to remove it as it is skewing the results or at least it will when this IS supported.
