Additional Comments

Platinum, the game runs out of the box :) There is a very useful built-in benchmark, I used that to compare Wine vs Wine Staging and the latter ran better. Anyway when in-game Wine Staging gives higher fps but also some huge drops whenever the camera moves, if you encounter the same problem stick with Vanilla Wine that gives lower but way more stable fps. Add -novsync to the launcher to disable it! On another PC with AMD i tried Wine Gallium Nine (1.9.10) and the performances where improved as usual but the shadows were rendered too dark, I'm going to try again soon :) ~·~·~·~·~ I uploaded some screenshots (comparing Wine vs Wine Staging) on my blog: https://manerosss.wordpress.com/ ~·~·~·~·~ Antergos + OpenBox Nvidia 367.35 Wine 1.9.15 Gallium Nine (AUR) Phenom II x2 511 Gainward GTX 650 1gb 4gb ddr3 500GB HDD 7200 rpm

HowTo / Notes

Prevent Freezing

CoH has a bug where the game can freeze if something else tries to take focus.  A few things you can do to minimize the chances of your game freezing in the middle of play.

  1. Disable Steam Overlay
  2. Open Steam chat windows with people who might try to contact you.
  3. Close everything else, especially calendaring systems

Blackscreen bug
by Lakorta on Tuesday October 24th 2017, 8:32
Had the same problem with the black screen bug with 2.19-staging. After changing the wine version a few times (e.g. to 2.5, 2.17, 2.12-staging etc. using PlayOnLinux) it started working again even with versions that didn't work before (like 2.19-staging). Not quite sure why though.

Would be interested in knowing the culprit and fix, I'm using wine-2.21(staging). Everything I tried, even wine config suggestions I found from 2010. Still no luck, still get the black screen with audio. Bryan Quigley has multiple successful tests, would be interested in knowing how he or anyone else got it running.

Doubt it helps but me currently working configuration used the Steam install script from PlayOnLinux together with a -no-cef-sandbox argument (for Steam store to work), wine-2.21-staging (32-bit), a 1280x768 sized virtual desktop and an ingame resolution from 1280x768 with settings on medium-high. Windows version is set to Windows 7 (default) and I used the PrivateUserDirs script from PlayOnLinux (which shouldn't make any difference though). The installation is somewhat new, I have no other games except mods for Company of Heroes installed (AFAIK they don't change any base game files so that shouldn't matter, the base game still works fine on it own) and I changed wine versions several times until it worked again.
