Voobly

What works

I got it to work quite well after including DirectPlay DLLs w/ overrides, setting firewall, and applying NoCD patches to M$ games.

Here's the highlights:

• Install
• Running from terminal
• Instant Messaging Buddies, sending emotions, noises etc.
  
• Joining lobby from browser (with hacks)
• Game Recognition and Playing games online (with hacks)
• Glass Skin works fine, all fonts and colors.
• Full Screen and virtual desktop. (Virtual Desktop suggested because it launches older games which mess with Xorg some times.)
  

What does not

• Does not configure "voobly:\\" extension in firefox on Ubuntu.
• Anti-Cheat DLL fusses for having to use any NoCD patched games. Not much of an issue, except for SafeDisc protected games, just tell host to turn off anti-cheat. :-P

• Never got the firefox hack to work, although some say it does. Instead use a browser installed on wine. Or try the old hack:

Additional Comments

You will need to install FireFox (or IEs4Linux, or any other browser) inside of wine FIRST. Then install Voobly. This will allow it to bind to the "voobly:\\" protocol and you can use the browser to connect to the lobbies. Make sure all games you are running are patched to latest versions. I have successfully played Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings, and Age of Empires 2: Age of Conquerors over Voobly. :-) Also make sure your distro is properly set to leave ports open or games won't launch even with DirectPlay DLL overrides. 47624 (DirectPlay), 2300-2400 (directplay).
