What works

User interface, favorites, copy+cut+paste, refresh+cancel, increase+decrease font size, opening local files or localhost, opening general webpages, history, printing, page set-up, and view source.

What does not

During installation two messages appearing say that the program group (usually "Microsoft Internet Explorer") cannot be created or shown, but this doesn't cause any additional problems; basically, its not added to the Wine menu and can be accessed from "~/.wine/drive_c/IEXPLORE/IEXPLORE.EXE". Most images don't load, but I think its because IE-1.5 doesn't support PNG images. I have really seen no image load what-so-ever.

What was not tested

Most options, cache settings, file associations, and proxy servers.

Additional Comments

Sites that force "www." or any URL including the "www." do not work, likewise non-".htm" files don't work. Images and almost every modern form of HTML do not work. Many pages (like Wikipedia) have infinite loops that shouldn't occur; of course, this is because we're in 1996 here.

HowTo / Notes

This note was originally added to IE Version 5, but may be relevant to all versions.

Don't run IE on an RW mounted DOS partition !
Pretty problematic directory renaming/corruption can happen.
This seems to happen if Wine doesn't have access to certain Windows registry keys.
Renames e.g. "Program Files" to "$!$!$!$!.pfr" and does other horrible things.
BTW, it does not only happen with IE, as it seems to be a generic Windows Setup process of Explorer which is doing this, which can be launched under multiple circumstances.
To be safe, use a backup copy only, i.e. copy all relevant windows files over e.g. to an ext2 partition.
