TaxACT prepares, prints, and e-files US federal and state income taxes. Includes tax planning. TaxACT provides a free (as in beer) standard (crippled) version which can be upgraded to the deluxe version (uncrippled) for $20 with state or $14 without. Federal e-file is included with the deluxe version. The most annoying feature missing from the standard version is the ability to import last years data. If anything will get you to plunk down the $20, that will. Other than that, everything is pretty much as advertised.
I've run versions from 2006 through 2008 successfully with only the checkbox problem.
However, 2009 seems to have some major regressions.

What works
Installing. Starting the program. Navigating to random forms.
I just downloaded the preview of the 2009 Delux edition, and it
installs fine.
What does not
Seeing help (the help window opens, but the main pane is blank). Dialog boxes that open on startup. Seeing the main pane of the app until I press a toolbar button or select a menu item.
When I open it, I see a small, square dialog box that
has a red circle with a white X and an OK button. If I click on
certain spots (e.g., the window menu box in the upper left), I get the
"Have you ordered your TaxACT State Edition?" dialog. Clicking
Continue gets me a frame with the TaxACT buttons and menu but a
transparent main pane. Selecting a button or menu fills in the rest of
the window, and things seem okay.
If I select File > Import > TaxACT 2008 Return
..., I get that same, square dialog box. Clicking OK makes the button
disappear, but the box is still there, and it doesn't let me import.
The toolbars and menus still seem active, though.

What was not tested
Entering new data. Saving data.

Additional Comments
I may be generous in giving it a bronze, but I'm hopeful it's an easy fix, and I think it will work if I want to re-enter all my old account information.
