TaxACT prepares, prints, and e-files US federal and state income taxes. Includes tax planning. TaxACT provides a free (as in beer) standard (crippled) version which can be upgraded to the deluxe version (uncrippled) for $20 with state or $14 without. Federal e-file is included with the deluxe version. The most annoying feature missing from the standard version is the ability to import last years data. If anything will get you to plunk down the $20, that will. Other than that, everything is pretty much as advertised.
I've run versions from 2006 through 2008 successfully with only the checkbox problem.
However, 2009 seems to have some major regressions.

What works
If you click on the forms button, you can manually edit and enter form data, and the text you type does appear, however, checkboxes are broken -- they seem to work but there is no visual indication whether they are checked or not. Also, scrolling is troublesome, often it will have the same objects and text "ghosted" when you try to scroll, creating multiple copies of them, because they page doesn't seem to refresh when you scroll. If you minimize the program and then restore it, sometimes this will refresh the view, allowing you to see what's on the screen until you try to scroll again.
What does not
The Help Center is just a white square, some alert dialog boxes just have a red X icon, but no text. All the sections of the screen are blank white boxes, but the tabs seem to work, and subsections within the tabs can be clicked, but the screen stays blank and white.
