Myst III: Exile

What works

Everything, except not hardware modes (3D and Audio). It played completely thru with no glitch worthy of the name.

This test is based on the 10th anniversary DVD edition, emulating winXP. It seems to work just as well emulating win98, but I didn't play it thru in that mode. I used a virtual desktop in every case. I already had quicktime installed and working, not to mention the proper drivers for my machine.

What does not

There's an initial screen that gives you a choice of 3D hardware acceleration, and this fails.

Winecfg gives me 3 sound options: ALSA sound is noisy (static, hi-end distortion) but adequate. OSS sound is clear, but skips. Esound Driver is clear and does not skip. The lip sync is off a bit, but that may have been the game. Esound generates the message

This sound card's driver does not support direct access
The (slower) DirectSound HEL mode will be used instead.

and life goes on happily after that. There are some jaggies in the graphics, but not on the still shots, so it must be the game.
