The game (online) Uninstall
Winetricks/PlayOnLinux is required to install and run the game. Requirements are : - DirectX 9.0c - .NET Framework 2.0 - Visual C++ 2008 (credits to http://crenk.com/cities-xl-on-mac-free-download-of-popular-sim-cities-game/ for instructions) I add to use a virtual desktop to have the game running. The good thing is that CitiesXL adapt to the size of the desktop (1152x720 here).

If the game is unable to connect to the server, you probably need to install the latest game patch from e.g. http://forum.citiesxl.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=90
If the game crashes straight off, try 'winetricks dotnet20 gdiplus'
If the game puts up its welcome splash screen and then a fatal dialog over that, try 'winetricks corefonts'.
If it asks you for a user account and login, go get one at http://www.citiesxl.com/signup?lang=en
I haven't figured out how to get it to log in yet. (I can log in fine on windows.)
