Since the Planet offer has ended, Monte Cristo has published a special patch who has bumped the game to version 1.1.

The standard screen loader.... This game has to have the root crack file applied in the /home/USERNAME/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/Monte Cristo/Cities XL/Paks (FOLDER) and the cracked EXE in the /home/USERNAME/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/Monte Cristo/Cities XL (FOLDER) the standard loader is replaced.... allowing you to play offline. This works no problem in wine 1.2 BUT in 1.3.1 you must disable the gameux in order for it to work!

The details in the game seems to run a little smoother than 1.2 BUT I have also upgrade my Nvidia drivers from 195* to the beta 256.52

If the game is unable to connect to the server, you probably need to install the latest game patch from e.g. http://forum.citiesxl.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=90
If the game crashes straight off, try 'winetricks dotnet20 gdiplus'
If the game puts up its welcome splash screen and then a fatal dialog over that, try 'winetricks corefonts'.
If it asks you for a user account and login, go get one at http://www.citiesxl.com/signup?lang=en
I haven't figured out how to get it to log in yet. (I can log in fine on windows.)
