What works

Singplayer and multiplayer (joined and hosted, server message does not crash the game, nothing was done to get this working beforehand).

Main menu and changing graphic settings.

Intro movie (but the voices are almost non-existent, this isnt the case for in-game playing).

Typing messages in-game. Making your character laugh and talk through Z and X speech menus.

 In-game sound.

What does not

After whole team dies, instead of respawning all together the game crashes (or Wine crashes) and I have to re-set my screen using the command xrandr -s 0.

Movie sound does not work properly ( effects are loud, voices are quiet and unhearable)

Workarounds

What was not tested

Talking through mic.

Additional Comments

***I have to stress that I find it odd that I can play multiplayer in L4d2 demo but not in L4D 1... L4D2 demo was played and tested on a computer with the following specs: Processor - Pentium 4 2.8Ghz RAM - 1.5GB DDR1 Graphics - Nvidia GeForce 9400GT (binary driver 190.42) #Given silver because eventhough multiplayer works, when you die and prepare to respawn Wine crashes! *I followed this when I got the Incomplete Installation problem. If you are getting stuck at the "Incomplete Installation (2)" error, then you can get around it by doing the following: 1. Install the L4D2 demo using Steam 2. Quit Steam 3. Download this gzipped tarball (~14 MB): http://www.tghost.co.uk/wine/steamappscommon.tar.gz 4. Extract that into the steamapps/ directory: ~ $ wget http://www.tghost.co.uk/wine/steamappscommon.tar.gz ~ $ cd .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/ steamapps $ tar -xvf ~/steamappscommon.tar.gz This will overwrite a few existing files, create some new directories, and create some new files, all inside the steamapps/common/left\ 4\ dead\ 2\ demo/ directory. 5. Launch the game using Steam The files for the tarball were got by comparing the md5sum of each file of a successfully installed version of the game on a Windows box to the partially installed version in Wine to see what the difference was.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO
- To get past the "Incomplete Installation" error:

Use Wine-1.1.35 or later

- To get past crashing at the MOTD display when joining a multiplayer game:

Either: Use native urlmon.dll (can be limited to just left4dead2.exe),
Or: Use wine-1.1.27 or earlier.

- To improve the performance

1. Enable multicore rendering.  This increases performance by 10-15 fps in most places for me.
2. Use the following patch:
http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=24812
This increases performance by 50-60 fps in most places for me.  Note that you may need to minimise/restore or otherwise lose and regain focus of the game to fix the flashlight and some textures if using this patch.
The performance is so much better in wine-1.1.33 that this doesn't seem to be needed any more.  The framerate with this in wine-1.1.32 was still higher than the framerate without this in wine-1.1.33 though.

- To get past the crashing/restarting/broken game files which occurs every few minutes during gameplay

Add -lv to the launch options in Steam.  This enables low gore mode, which for some reason fixes the problem.  Low gore mode doesn't look as great, but it's worth it for the stability.
