I needed to add d3dx9_34.dll (MD5: 1ca939918ed1b930059b3a882de6f648, from www.dll-files.com) to the directory "SteamApps/common/need for speed undercover/", else the screen remains completely dark, no sound and in console can be read a missing function, see bug ticket #25701 or #25035, which results in a game-crash.
