Installing the game, playing the battles and online challenges.
What does not
enabling the pixel shaders causes the screen in the (semi)3D parts to be black. Disabling them does the trick though.
What was not tested
The game has limited functionality as is. Pretty much everything was tested.
Disable pixel shaders if the editor and fleet setup screens are black. Note that the game itself is quite fragile and may crash every now and then, this mostly happens when entering the ship editor or when selecting a race. This is not a flaw in Wine, but rather inherent flakyness of the game itself.

Some testing has revealed that GSB functions fine if the "Allow pixel shader (if supported by hardware)" checkbox in the wine configuration tool is disabled.
Apparently enabling pixel shaders on capable hardware (NVIDIA or ATI cards with fairly recent drivers) does something the game doesn't like.
