To get java.exe to work, I had to add an entry in Winecfg to run it in Windows NT 4.0 mode.

Works, but you need to set Wine to emulate nt40 or win2k, otherwise you'll get Hotspot errors. If you want to use Swing pass the "-Dsun.java2d.noddraw" parameter to the JVM. A lot of warnings about guard stack pages are emitted, but don't appear to affect functioning of the applications.
