What works

jre-1.4 works great to show Java Web Applets on ies4linux until version 0.9.51 by following this guide below:

rmathew.blogspot.com/2007/04/running-java-applets-in-internet.html

But it doesn't work any more after wine has been upgraded to the recent version 0.9.52:

Opening web pages containing Java applets will cause ies4linux to crash.

What does not

wine version 0.9.48 - 0.9.51: all java web applets worked fine

wine version: 0.9.52, causing ies4linux to crash

HOWTO
(for JVM 1.4.1 on an unknown version of Wine:)

Works, but you need to set Wine to emulate nt40 or win2k, otherwise you'll get Hotspot errors. If you want to use Swing pass the "-Dsun.java2d.noddraw" parameter to the JVM. A lot of warnings about guard stack pages are emitted, but don't appear to affect functioning of the applications.
